Me Season 1 (AmazonPrimeVideo) Watching “Me,” it’s clear that the concept for this series likely emerged after the success of “Stranger Things.” While both series feature kids in supernatural settings, “Me” has its own unique charm. However, despite its short 21-minute episodes across 10 episodes, it struggles to consistently engage viewers. The series has its standout moments, but they are few and far between. The premise, centered on a 12-year-old boy who discovers he is a shape-shifter, holds great potential, yet the creators seem to have missed the mark. Ben, the protagonist, is depicted as lacking confidence and uncertain about his future, but the series often shows him acting beyond his years, with his self-doubt expressed more through body language than through his actions.
The series follows Ben (Lucian River Chauhan), a middle-class student adjusting to a new family dynamic after his mother, Elizabeth (Dilshad Vadsaria), remarries. As he gets involved with a group of fellow shape-shifters on a mission to stop an evil shape-shifter from wreaking havoc, Ben finds support in his stepsister, Max (Abigail Pniowsky), who helps him learn to use his powers for good.

Lucian River Chauhan does a solid job as Ben, but his direction doesn’t seem to fully align with the character. In the series, Ben is depicted as a timid child, fearful of school bullies and unsure about his new family after his mother’s remarriage. However, the portrayal often shows him acting and thinking beyond his years, with his skepticism conveyed more through body language than through his actions. Abigail Pniowsky shines as Ben’s stepsister, Max, delivering a natural performance that truly stands out. Dilshad Vadsaria as Elizabeth and Kyle Howard as Phil, Ben’s parents, provide expected yet authentic portrayals. Another highlight is Amanda Reid as Carter, who, despite her brief appearance, leaves a strong impression with her convincing performance.
“Me” suffers from subpar special effects that detract from the overall experience. While the series revolves around the battle between good and evil, it lacks the intense confrontations needed to elevate its impact. Despite having rich material—such as bullying incidents, family dynamics in Ben’s home, and shape-shifter gatherings—the show falls short on dramatic moments that could create intrigue. The action sequences are underwhelming and don’t deliver the excitement expected from true action scenes. At times, “Me” feels dull and lacks the intensity and edge of “Stranger Things.” This sanitized approach does the series no favors, leaving viewers craving more depth and excitement.
