Manorathangal (Zee5) Review :-

Showrunner Priyadarshan’s black-and-white film Olavum Theeravum is a mixed bag that excels with its outstanding technical aspects and music. Mohanlal and leading lady Durga Krishna deliver strong performances, though the superstar’s inconsistent dialect occasionally undermines his portrayal. The film’s artificial narration and dialogue, along with unconventional casting choices (such as a significantly younger Surabhi Lakshmi playing a mother figure to the lead), make this adaptation of MT Vasudevan Nair’s iconic work feel out of place within the Manorathangal anthology.

Kadugannava, directed by Ranjith and starring Mammootty, is a captivating film that appeals to both cinema enthusiasts and fans of MT Vasudevan Nair’s unique style. Mammootty delivers an exceptional performance as Venugopal, a senior journalist who travels to the Sri Lankan town of Kadugannava in search of his long-lost step-sister. His understated yet powerful narration enhances the storytelling. The casting of Vineeth and Anumol is spot-on, and the segment’s minimal dialogue, soulful background score, and evocative visuals combine to create a truly heartwarming experience.

Kazhcha, directed by Shyamaprasad, is a delightful watch, enhanced by its excellent production, music score, and the strong performances from Parvathy Thiruvothu, Narain, and Harish Uthaman. On the other hand, Shilalikhitham, the second episode by Priyadarshan in Manorathangal, impresses with its visuals and Biju Menon’s performance. However, the staging, narration, and some of the performances feel somewhat artificial.

Fahadh Faasil and Nadhiya Moidu excel in their roles, while the titular character, ‘Sherlock Holmes Shinde,’ is charmingly portrayed by an adorable cat. With its excellent technical elements and sharp dialogues, this episode proves to be an engaging watch.

Manorathangal (Zee5) Trailor :-

Vilpana, directed by Ashwathy Nair, stands out as the weakest episode of the anthology. The episode suffers from Asif Ali’s artificial look, Madhoo’s unconvincing performance, and the overly dramatic dubbing by Bhagyalakshmi, resulting in a rather mediocre watch. In contrast, Rathish Ambat’s Kadalkkaattu is memorable for its natural performances by Indrajith Sukumaran and Aparna Balamurali, along with its evocative music score. However, Ann Augustine’s role is underwhelming due to a poorly written character, and the lengthy English dialogues fail to make a significant impact.

Abhayam Thedi Veendum, directed by Santosh Sivan, is a visually stunning episode, highlighted by its impeccable visuals, evocative music score, and Siddique’s outstanding performance. However, the narrative’s frequent shifts between reality and delusion may make it challenging for viewers to fully engage with the story. On the other hand, Jayaraj’s Swargam Thurakkunna Samayam is profoundly moving. The emotional journey of bedridden Madhavan Mash (played wonderfully by Nedumudi Venu) and the indifferent Kutti Narayanan (portrayed with extraordinary simplicity by Indrans) create a memorable experience, thanks to its exceptional direction and performances.

The MT Vasudevan Nair anthology is undoubtedly one of the finest web shows produced by the Malayalam industry to date. Manorathangal, showcasing top talent in both its cast and technical team, offers a rich experience for Malayalam literature enthusiasts and film lovers alike. However, viewers unfamiliar with MT Vasudevan Nair’s literary works and his distinctive style may not connect with the Zee5 web series in the same way.

Verdict

Manorathangal is a fitting tribute to the legendary writer MT Vasudevan Nair and to cinema itself. This extensive collaboration of Malayalam cinema’s finest talents features many successes along with a few shortcomings. Nevertheless, this Zee5 anthology series comes highly recommended for all film enthusiasts.
