Love Sitara (Zee5) Review :-
Sitara is an award-winning interior designer, while her boyfriend Arjun (Rajeev Siddhartha) is a highly sought-after chef in Mumbai. Although Arjun is eager to marry Sitara, she has always been against the idea, even rejecting his proposal in the past. Surprisingly, it’s Sitara who eventually persuades Arjun to marry her. He agrees immediately, unaware that she’s keeping a secret from him. Wanting a whirlwind wedding that connects her to her roots, she chooses her grandmother’s house in Kerala as the venue for a simple ceremony. Though everyone is taken aback by Sitara’s sudden decision to marry so quickly, they decide to support her plans.
In the village, Sitara’s entire family gathers: her parents, Latha (Virginia Rodrigues) and Govind (Sanjay Bhutiani), her aunt Hema (Sonali Kulkarni), and her grandmother Amuma (B. Jayashree). They are joined by Sitara’s best friend, Anjali (Tamara D’souza), along with Arjun and his father. As the wedding approaches, Sitara discovers some old photographs that hint at a possible affair between Govind and Hema—suggesting they might still be involved. This revelation catches her off guard, prompting her to involve Arjun in her quest to uncover the truth. While Sitara grapples with her aunt’s hypocrisy—given Hema’s pride in being an independent woman who has never felt the need to marry—she also comes to terms with her own secret of hiding this from Arjun. Determined to reveal everything, Sitara decides to come clean to everyone, unaware of the potential consequences of her actions.
Director Vandana Kulkarni, known for her 2018 film Noblemen, which poignantly addresses bullying in boys’ hostels, weaves together a diverse cast of female characters across three generations in Love, Sitara. There’s Sitara, independent and confident yet unsure of what she truly wants; Latha, the devoted mother and wife who may have forgotten to live for herself; Hema, an air hostess who attracts male attention but has chosen to remain single; and Amuma, who has raised two daughters on her own and seems hardened by life’s challenges. Each character is flawed in her own way.
Love, Sitara delves into family bonds, revealing that every family carries its share of secrets and dysfunction, no matter how perfectly they present themselves to the outside world. It also addresses the pressure to conform to societal norms. While the themes are compelling, the film’s narrative occasionally falters, relying on familiar tropes and featuring some awkward moments. However, the core message ultimately resonates. The cinematography by Szymon Lenkowski beautifully captures Kerala’s lush landscapes and cultural essence, while the soundtrack by Sangeet and Siddharth Haldipur is enjoyable and catchy.
The film could have benefited from more nuance and a deeper exploration of its themes. While it touches on the profound effects of generational trauma, it fails to emphasize that actions have consequences. By neglecting this crucial aspect, the ending leaves you feeling confused and somewhat cheated. There’s only one scene that ties everything together, but the film doesn’t take the time to reflect on the past or evaluate the present actions, which is truly disappointing.
Love Sitara (Zee5) Trailor :-
The moments featuring the women in their own environments feel organic and raw, but the film needed more of these genuine interactions. As a result, while you might want to connect with their stories, it often feels like you’re always one step behind, struggling to catch up. Additionally, Dhulipala, who plays Sitara, comes across as somewhat stiff, delivering a rather generic performance, which doesn’t help the film’s impact. However, the other actors excel and effectively convey their characters’ emotions.
Final Thoughts
B. Jayashree, Virginia Rodrigues, and Sonali Kulkarni deliver strong performances that enhance the film. However, it largely relies on Sitara, and Sobhita Dhulipala’s captivating screen presence truly stands out. Rajeev Siddhartha’s Arjun serves as an effective counterbalance to her vibrant yet flawed character.
This film had the potential to be a moving and relatable experience, but it felt somewhat rushed and superficial. I found it strange that the adults weren’t held accountable for their actions, making the consequences seem too easy and forgettable. This ultimately renders the film feeling inconsequential. While it touches on generational trauma, it fails to convey the true impact of that trauma, which is a significant missed opportunity.
