Although the ratings were solid, especially among the coveted 16-34 demographic, with 1.1 million viewers tuning in, the total average fell slightly below recent seasons. Broadcast reported that the debut episodes in January 2020 and June 2021 both averaged 2.7 million viewers, translating to a 13.7% and 12.8% audience share respectively. When including viewership on PC, mobile, and tablet devices, the figure rose to 3 million viewers.

The show also generated buzz on Twitter, with viewers discussing the contestants. One point of discussion was the age of one of the youngest Islanders, Gemma Owen, who is the daughter of soccer player Michael Owen and is only 19 years old. Additionally, some Twitter users noted that the initial pairings, determined by public vote, resulted in all contestants of color being coupled with each other.
“Love Island” is a significant revenue generator for ITV, with commercial partnerships, advertising, and international format sales contributing to its success. However, the show has faced criticism for issues such as lack of diversity among contestants and concerns about the well-being of participants, including the suicides of two former Islanders and the show’s former host, Caroline Flack, within three consecutive years.
Last month, ITV announced updated duty of care protocols for “Love Island,” including diversity training, counseling services, and financial and social media advice for participants. These measures aim to address concerns and improve the well-being and inclusivity of the show’s cast and crew.
