Now, Apple TV+’s Loot, featuring Maya Rudolph as a billionaire striving to become a philanthropist, ventures into this territory. While its debut season doesn’t quite reach the heights of shows like Abbott Elementary, Loot still offers plenty of charm and laugh-out-loud moments, making it a delightful sitcom binge.

At its core, Loot showcases the brilliance of Maya Rudolph. Portraying Molly Novak, the ex-wife of tech magnate John Novak (played by Adam Scott), Rudolph shines. In the series premiere, Molly discovers John’s infidelity and walks away from the divorce with a staggering $87 billion. She then embarks on a globe-trotting spree with her assistant Nicholas (played by Joel Kim Booster), visiting hotspots from Berlin to Rio.

However, Molly’s carefree lifestyle takes a turn when she realizes she oversees a philanthropic foundation. Driven by a desire to make a difference (and perhaps to spite John), she decides to take a more active role in the foundation’s activities, much to the dismay of its pragmatic director, Sofia (portrayed by Michaela Jaé Rodriguez).

Rudolph portrays Molly not as a stereotypical billionaire, but as someone with genuine intentions hindered by her disconnected lifestyle. Her comedic timing shines, particularly in memorable scenes such as her appearance on Hot Ones, where she hilariously struggles with the spicy challenge.

While Rudolph leads the ensemble, she’s not alone in delivering standout performances. Rodriguez, known for her role in Pose, infuses Sofia with intensity and humor, serving as an excellent foil to Molly’s antics. Booster excels as Nicholas, delivering witty one-liners and revealing layers of his character’s personality as the season progresses.

Ron Funches portrays Howard, Molly’s optimistic cousin working at the foundation, while Nat Faxon plays Arthur, the foundation’s mild-mannered accountant. Funches brings warmth and humor to Howard, forming an unlikely friendship with Booster’s Nicholas. Faxon’s portrayal of Arthur provides a subtle contrast to the series’ broader performances, and his budding relationship with Molly adds a touch of romance to Loot.

Overall, Loot presents a promising blend of humor, heart, and stellar performances, making it a worthy addition to the sitcom landscape.
