But here’s the thing: more people need to be watching and talking about this show. Awards may not be everything, but they sure are fun, and I can’t help but imagine acceptance speeches from Maya Rudolph and Joel Kim Booster. If Loot season two isn’t receiving heaps of praise, well, we all deserve to drink subpar water, don’t we?
Now, let’s jog our memories a bit. At the end of season one, Molly found out her tech-billionaire husband John Novak (played by the ever-douchier Adam Scott) was cheating on her. She divorced him and walked away with a cool $87 billion. Determined to do something meaningful with her wealth, Molly immersed herself in the Wells Foundation, much to the dismay of its executive director Sofia Salinas (Michaela Jaé Rodriguez). Despite Molly’s ineptitude at running the foundation, she and her team embarked on a journey of growth and self-discovery.
However, Molly’s foray into romance with the suave French billionaire Jean-Pierre (Olivier Martinez) proved to be a major misstep. His water-purification technology turned out to be a sham, leading to a humiliating debacle at the Silver Moon Summit. In the aftermath, Molly realized her true calling: giving away her $120 billion fortune to make a positive impact. And just when things couldn’t get more chaotic, her ex-husband showed up, and they ended up in bed together, capping off a roller coaster of a season finale.
Season two kicks off a few weeks after the Corsica debacle. Molly finds that spending her $120 billion fortune in a meaningful way is no easy feat, especially when her attempts are marred by cringe-worthy public appearances and image blunders. Despite resolving her issues with her ex-husband John, Molly’s reputation as a lying billionaire remains a thorn in her side.
The Wells Foundation’s Alameda Street project, aimed at aiding the unhoused population, faces a major setback when the mayor’s office abruptly halts it. Molly convenes a team meeting to brainstorm ideas for fulfilling her philanthropic promise. Amidst the chaos, Sofia suggests partnering with billionaire Noah, known for his charitable giving algorithm. Molly eagerly invites Noah to her mansion, only to discover he’s a fraud, arrested by the FBI for wire fraud and money laundering.
Feeling defeated by her recurring mistakes, Molly finds solace in Arthur’s support. Their bond grows stronger as Arthur reassures Molly of her capabilities. Meanwhile, Molly discovers her cousin Howard has been living in her guesthouse, prompting her to consider purchasing unused hotels for housing the unhoused population.
The team rallies behind Molly’s new initiative, “Space for Everyone,” which aims to provide housing, career centers, and healthcare clinics. Despite initial doubts, the project gains traction, earning praise from the community. However, Molly’s triumph is short-lived when John announces his space launch, stealing her spotlight and undermining her efforts to distance herself from the billionaire class.
As Molly grapples with this setback, she realizes the challenges of dismantling her ties to wealth and privilege. Despite the obstacles, she remains determined to forge a path as a woman of the people.
In episode two, titled “Clueless,” Space for Everyone is making progress as Molly closes in on her first unused hotel, which can accommodate 600 people once renovated. However, Molly’s altruism extends beyond the masses; she’s also keen on playing matchmaker for Sofia, her close associate. After a movie night featuring Clueless and some gin-smoothies, Molly’s friend Nicholas compares her to the film’s protagonist, Cher Horowitz, noting her style and selfless quest to aid the underprivileged. Inspired by the rom-com vibe, Molly orchestrates a setup between Sofia and Isaac, an architect working on the hotel project.
Sparks fly between Sofia and Isaac during their forced evening together, much to Molly and Nicholas’s delight. Despite Sofia’s initial hesitation to initiate contact, she’s intrigued by Isaac and eventually reaches out. However, when Nicholas exposes Sofia’s embarrassing barrage of unanswered texts during a team meeting, Sofia’s dating struggles come to light once again, adding a humorous yet relatable subplot to the season.
While Nicholas urges Sofia to flee the situation, Molly persists in her matchmaking efforts. She enlists Goran from her security team to investigate Isaac’s behavior, only to discover he’s attending a late friend’s memorial at a bar. Sofia’s spontaneous appearance at the bar leads to a heartwarming reconciliation, as Isaac clarifies his intentions and respects Sofia’s professional boundaries.
Despite successfully pairing Sofia and Isaac, Molly’s fleeting moment of satisfaction is overshadowed by her longing for her own romantic fulfillment. As she watches the happy ending of Clueless, Molly realizes that while meddling in others’ love lives is rewarding, she yearns for her own chance at true romance.
