What if life presented you with three chances to right your wrongs and avoid imminent death? Directed by Aakash Bhatia and set against the backdrop of Goa, “Looop Lapeta” is a quirky Hindi adaptation of the acclaimed 90s German thriller “Run Lola Run” by Tom Tykwer. Taapsee steps into the shoes of Franka Potente, albeit with a bit more time to gather the money. As Savi, the former sprinter, she has 80 minutes, unlike Lola’s 20, to navigate through a series of challenges and come up with ₹50 lakh. The crux of the story lies in the time-loop mechanism, which grants her three attempts to retrieve the cash in different ways and avoid meeting a grim fate. How does this frenetic comedy-thriller unfold?
Taapsee Pannu running through the chaos of movies with unwavering determination is quite a spectacle. The actress deserves accolades for her consistent effort to portray unconventional characters and narrate diverse stories. Every film featuring Taapsee promises to be distinct, and that in itself is a significant accomplishment for her. “Looop Lapeta” is yet another exhilarating ride, with a ticking-clock premise that keeps you on the edge of your seat. True to the spirit and execution of the original, the Hindi adaptation successfully crafts its own captivating universe and identity.
With a runtime exceeding the original by almost an hour, the sense of urgency feels somewhat diluted to accommodate the ensemble cast of characters. While one may feel that the film could have been more concise, the deliberate pacing pays off as the story progresses. The original film was rightfully hailed as “experimental” and ahead of its time in terms of storytelling. Since then, a slew of time-loop series and films have emerged, including Netflix’s “Russian Doll.” Although the genre is still relatively new in Hindi cinema, “Looop Lapeta” is a refreshing addition.
In each iteration of the loop, Savi finds herself in a vivid green bathroom, receiving a frantic phone call from Satya, pleading for her help to save his life. Each loop culminates in a death, except for one. As the two protagonists relive these harrowing 80 minutes thrice, the concept of the inescapable time loop could potentially feel repetitive. However, the talented team of writers, including Vinay Chhawal, Arnav Nanduri, along with Bhatia, ensures that this is not the case. The adapted screenplay is simplified to resonate with the Indian audience, and the humor is predominantly situational, adding to its effectiveness.
The music and animation departments also play pivotal roles in creating the trippy, twisty, and comedic atmosphere envisioned for the film. With a panicky Taapsee, Tahir, and the supporting cast, each character must resort to desperate measures to salvage the situation, and they all deliver commendable performances.
“Looop Lapeta” is a refreshing departure from the ordinary. Don’t miss it.
