As the third Marvel TV show to debut this year, “Loki” is positioned to pave the way for future MCU installments, with head writer Michael Waldron also contributing to “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Consequently, the series introduces some significant concepts over the course of its six episodes. A word of caution to Marvel fans: the following discussion contains spoilers not only for the show but also for the future trajectory of the MCU.
When we last saw Loki in “Avengers: Endgame,” he was snatching the Tesseract (aka the Space Stone) during the 2012 Battle of New York in a brief moment of time-travel. However, as “Loki” reveals, his escape attempt lasts mere moments before he’s apprehended by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), an enigmatic organization tasked with maintaining the sanctity of the timeline. Through the TVA’s intervention, viewers are introduced to the concept of the Multiverse, elucidated by a holographic guide named Miss Minutes and an accompanying informational video.
The TVA’s primary objective is to apprehend and prune “variants” – individuals whose actions threaten to disrupt the sacred timeline. However, the series raises questions about who determines what events are “supposed” to occur. Recruited by Mobius, Loki is enlisted to assist in apprehending a dangerous variant – another version of himself. While this initially seems to be the central conflict of the series, the true identity of this variant is revealed by the end of episode two, shifting the narrative focus towards Sylvie, a female Loki variant with her own agenda.
Despite grappling with grandiose concepts such as the Multiverse and the manipulation of time, “Loki” remains introspective at its core. It explores themes of identity and self-discovery, as characters confront their past traumas and insecurities. For Hiddleston’s Loki, this marks a significant departure from his previous MCU appearances, providing ample opportunity for character development over the course of the series. Similarly, Sylvie’s character undergoes a transformation from a mysterious antagonist to a complex individual grappling with her own vulnerabilities.
Central to the series are the relationships between characters, which evolve and fracture amidst a backdrop of uncertainty and deception. Trust becomes a central theme, as characters navigate alliances and betrayals, blurring the lines between friend and foe. Standout dynamics include Mobius and Ravonna’s complicated history, Loki and Mobius’ burgeoning friendship, and the burgeoning connection between Sylvie and Loki.
While Hiddleston’s performance as Loki remains a highlight, Sophia Di Martino’s portrayal of Sylvie emerges as another standout aspect of the show. Capturing the character’s blend of strength and vulnerability, Di Martino delivers a compelling performance that adds depth to the series’ narrative.
Amidst its mind-bending plot twists and character-driven drama, “Loki” strikes a balance between poignancy and humor. The series maintains a sense of intrigue and urgency, propelling the narrative forward with each episode.
