In her debut film “3,” Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth showcased her ability to create tender moments on screen with delicate effectiveness. She demonstrates this talent once again in “Lal Salaam.”

However, similar to “3,” Aishwaryaa restricts these tender moments in favor of addressing broader themes. For instance, a scene where Rajinikanth (Moideen Bhai) playfully acts as a bowler while playing cricket with his son (Vikranth) is delightful.
Unfortunately, Aishwaryaa often sidelines such moments to focus more on the film’s primary conflict. Even when she does highlight these scenes, they tend to drag on, as seen in a lengthy dinner table conversation. While these scenes evoke happiness, their prolonged duration becomes slightly frustrating.
The film’s excessive runtime is its major drawback. Lengthy, purposeless scenes hinder the story’s progression, leaving the audience feeling stagnant.
“Lal Salaam” primarily tackles religious unrest and the Hindu-Muslim divide, showcasing commendable political awareness. However, the resolution of the conflict lacks nuance and feels too conveniently scripted.
Vishnu Rangasamy’s cinematography maintains a dignified tone, preventing the film from feeling abrupt. AR Rahman’s songs are effective individually but fall short as a cohesive narrative device.
Rajinikanth’s magnetic presence elevates “Lal Salaam,” though the burden of selling the film shouldn’t rest solely on him. The entire cast delivers strong performances, with Vishnu Vishal standing out.
Overall, “Lal Salaam” would have been less captivating without Rajinikanth’s involvement. However, the film’s reliance on his presence underscores missed opportunities for the ensemble cast to shine.
