Laila Review :-

Director Ram Narayan’s Laila attempts to blend comedy, drama, and social commentary but struggles with inconsistent execution. While the film boasts a stylish presentation, it falls short in terms of narrative depth. The exploration of gender fluidity and breaking stereotypes is briefly touched upon, but never fully developed, as the screenplay focuses more on exaggerated theatrics than meaningful storytelling. The uneven direction causes some genuinely entertaining moments to be overshadowed by outdated humour and forced drama.

Vishwak Sen stands out in his portrayal of Sonu, a talented makeup artist who, inspired by his late mother, opens a beauty parlour with deep sentimental value. His skills make him popular among the women in his community, sparking jealousy and resentment among their husbands. This tension escalates when Rustum (Abhimanyu Singh), a local thug fixated on finding a bride resembling a heroine from a Megastar Chiranjeevi film, and SI Shankar (Babloo Prithiveeraj), a womaniser lusting after beautiful women, clash with Sonu. Their confrontation ignites a series of chaotic events, leading Sonu to assume the persona of Laila in a bid to outwit them.

While the premise of Laila promises an intriguing blend of comedy and drama, the film ultimately prioritizes style and flamboyant entertainment over substance, occasionally veering into cringe-worthy territory. The first half introduces Sonu’s world, while the second half shifts to his antics as Laila.

Vishwak Sen delivers a charming and charismatic performance as Sonu, effortlessly owning his screen time. However, his transformation into Laila, though impressive in its effort, doesn’t fully convince. The film relies heavily on his strong presence, which he carries well, but the uneven screenplay fails to deepen the story. Akanksha Sharma shines as Jenny, bringing boldness and glamour to her role. Though her character mainly supports Sonu’s journey, her vibrant energy adds a much-needed spark to the film.

Abhimanyu Singh as Rustum and Babloo Prithiveeraj as SI Shankar add some dramatic tension, but their characters often feel more like caricatures than fully developed antagonists. The humor, especially in their exchanges with Sonu/Laila, tends to feel outdated and repetitive.

On the technical side, Richard Prasad’s cinematography stands out, successfully highlighting the glamour of Sonu’s world. However, the rest of the narrative doesn’t receive the same attention. The editing feels a bit sluggish, disrupting the film’s flow and contributing to its uneven pacing.

Laila Trailor :-

Final Thought

Laila struggles with consistency, as its messaging feels fragmented, with only occasional glimpses of progressive ideas. While the film offers moments of fun and quirkiness, it ultimately fails to leave a lasting impression.
