The film traces the journey of Deva (Dhanush), whose life is upended after a fateful meeting with Deepak (Nagarjuna), a former CBI officer now working with a secretive financial syndicate led by the shrewd and powerful Dheeraj Mitra (Jim Sarbh). Tempted by the allure of quick wealth and a stable future, Deva is pulled into the dark world of black money laundering and underground finance, where every move comes at a cost.

Kuberaa marks a striking departure for director Sekhar Kammula, trading his signature warmth for a slow-burning social drama steeped in tension and moral ambiguity. In this darker, more layered narrative, he dives deep into the murky intersections of money, identity, and ethics—posing unsettling questions about what we’re willing to sacrifice in the pursuit of wealth, and what true worth really means in a world driven by survival.
Dhanush delivers a standout performance, marked by quiet intensity and emotional depth. His transformation—from a destitute man with a photographic memory to a shadowy figure navigating the world of financial crime—is not just physical, but deeply internal. He inhabits the role with nuance, portraying a man torn between compassion and survival, equally tender toward people and animals. Nagarjuna Akkineni is a revelation, offering a restrained, smouldering performance that simmers with unspoken tension. Rashmika Mandanna brings lightness to the narrative, her innocent charm and subtle humour offering a welcome contrast. Jim Sarbh is magnetic as the antagonist, exuding a quiet menace that never feels overplayed. The supporting cast rounds out the film well, though a few characters could have benefited from more dimension.
On the technical front, the film is a visual delight. Niketh Bommireddy’s cinematography cloaks the story in rich shadows and striking contrasts, mirroring the inner conflicts and dualities of its characters. Devi Sri Prasad’s background score is understated yet powerful, enhancing the atmosphere without overpowering the narrative, and letting the story speak for itself.

Where Kuberaa stumbles is in its pacing—the first half unfolds at a deliberately slow tempo, perhaps a bit too much so. A tighter edit could have sharpened the film’s momentum. Yet, it manages to hold your attention through its atmospheric storytelling, striking visuals, haunting score, and timely themes that probe the cost of survival and the dark side of ambition.
