In a scene from director Dinjith Ayyathan’s Kishkinda Kaandam, Asif Ali’s character Ajayan, accompanied by his second wife Aparna (Aparna Balamurali) and his former brother-in-law, is traveling by train to Karnataka. They are on a mission to determine whether a recently discovered body belongs to Ajayan’s missing son. During the journey, Ajayan, lost in reflective thought, struggles to recall the name of his son’s favorite game. He eventually admits that, due to the demands of caring for his late wife during her illness, he never had the chance to focus on his son, let alone remember something as simple as a game that once excited him.
In this scene and another involving a seemingly endless stairwell spanning three generations, the film’s writer Bahul Ramesh and director Dinjith Ayyathan deftly reveal and obscure aspects of Ajayan’s character and his world. It’s a world where Ajayan and his father Appunni selectively embrace the portions of reality they find comfortable, replaying and reenacting them in both their minds and everyday life.
Kishkinda Kaandam centers on three characters and their intertwined realities. Ajayan, who has lost his wife and son, now finds himself caring for his indifferent father, Appunni. Meanwhile, Aparna is grappling with her new environment, which initially shocks her when the police question Appunni about a missing revolver. As Aparna tries to establish her place in this complex world, she uncovers insights about Ajayan, Appunni, and their relationships. Her journey also reveals how the missing revolver, Ajayan’s son, and the local monkeys are all interconnected.
The film begins as a slow-burn thriller, gradually unfolding fragmented information in the first half. This approach beautifully immerses the audience in Appunni’s complex character, offering a glimpse into his mind. Simultaneously, we see Ajayan’s struggle as he finds himself trapped in a repetitive cycle that acts both as punishment and solace. While his situation might seem irrational at times, the writing periodically addresses these concerns and delivers a satisfying resolution by the end.
The film’s strength lies in its clever screenplay, which intricately weaves together the mystery of a missing gun in a monkey-filled forest with the pieces that Appunni and Aparna are trying to piece together separately to understand the disappearance of Ajayan’s son. The narrative includes elements of mistrust, dignity, understanding, empathy, love, and concern, all balanced throughout the film. This brilliant slow-burn thriller, edited by Sooraj ES, effectively captures the essence of each character’s journey. Mujeeb Majeed’s score enhances the emotional depth and maintains the film’s momentum, even as the story deliberately circles back on itself.

Asif Ali, currently in a phase of reinvention, excels once again in his role, marking it as his most demanding performance of the year. This comes after his roles in Thalavan, Level Cross, and Adios Amigo. As Ajayan, he embodies vulnerability, balancing his support for his father’s arrogance with a sensitivity to the world around him. Vijayaraghavan, playing Appunni, masterfully navigates multiple facets of his character, often within a single scene. Aparna also plays a crucial role in advancing the story, bringing the right amount of curiosity without overwhelming the narrative, as her character seeks to establish her place in this enigmatic world.
Dinjith Ayyathan skillfully presents the film’s final act, ensuring each character receives the empathy they deserve, which is a key element that makes Kishkinda Kaandam so compelling.

This Asif Ali-starring film might emerge as a dark horse this Onam season, but it is crafted with considerable heart, and that is evident throughout.
