Kesari Chapter 2- The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh Review :-
The battleground shifts from Saragarhi in Kesari (2019) to the courtroom in director Karan Singh Tyagi’s gripping historical drama. Drawing inspiration from The Case That Shook the Empire by C. Sankaran Nair’s grandson Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat, writers Tyagi and Amritpal Bindra craft a narrative rich in emotion, outrage, and suspense. The haunting recreation of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre strikes an emotional chord, the overwhelming injustice ignites fury, and the courtroom showdown keeps the tension high.
Though the pacing stumbles early on—especially during the scenes where Sankaran aids in convicting revolutionary Kirpal Singh (Jaipreet Singh) and the preliminary trial against General Reginald Dyer (Simon Paisley Day)—the drama truly takes flight when Sankaran confronts his formidable adversary, Anglo-Indian lawyer Neville McKinley, played by R. Madhavan.

Production designer Rita Ghosh masterfully brings the pre-Independence era to life with striking authenticity, while Debojeet Ray’s cinematography—complemented by Karan Singh Tyagi’s assured direction and nuanced treatment—keeps the audience thoroughly engaged. Shashwat Sachdev’s stirring composition O Shera and Azeem Dayani’s powerful background score further amplify the film’s emotional impact.
The narrative effectively exposes the corruption within the British Empire, its deep-seated contempt for Indians, and the rising tide of revolutionary fervor—all without resorting to melodrama. However, Sankaran’s evolution from a loyal servant of the Crown to a fervent nationalist feels somewhat hurried, leaving room for a more gradual exploration of his ideological shift.

The film’s sharp narrative is anchored by a commanding performance from Akshay Kumar, who embodies the intelligence and courage of C. Sankaran Nair with conviction. R. Madhavan matches him step for step, delivering a restrained yet powerful turn as his formidable legal rival. Ananya Panday impresses as Dilreet Gill, Sankaran’s co-counsel and a driving force in the courtroom battle. Her performance captures a compelling arc—from a nervous newcomer unsure of her footing to a fiery and determined cross-examiner in a pivotal sequence.
Simon Paisley Day stands out as the menacing General Dyer. The film offers a chilling glimpse into his backstory—his childhood marked by bullying due to his stutter and the inherited prejudice from his father—which adds unsettling depth to his character. Krish Rao, as Pargat Singh, the young boy who loses his family in the massacre and finds the courage to speak out, delivers a stirring and memorable performance.
