The latest installment in the beloved franchise, building on 2010’s Karate Kid, reinvents the classic storyline with two intriguing twists. First, it introduces a unique fusion of kung fu and boxing as Li begins training Victor Lipani (Joshua Jackson), an aging pizzeria owner and former boxing champion. Second, it evolves into a hybrid fighting style that combines the philosophies of kung fu and karate. This fresh direction sets the stage for dynamic and engaging training montages, elevated by the return of shifu Han (Jackie Chan) from Li’s Beijing dojo and Sensei Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) from the Japanese Miyagi school — once led by the legendary Nariyoshi Keisuke Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita).
At just 95 minutes, the film maintains a brisk pace, occasionally veering into rushed territory as it tries to juggle several plotlines — Li’s blossoming romance with Mia (Sadie Stanley), his efforts to train her father, Victor, and the looming showdown with her ex, Conor (Aramis Knight), the undefeated Five Boroughs Tournament champion. While kung fu and karate traditionally emphasize discipline, the film leans more heavily on showcasing technique, resulting in a slightly uneven tone. Still, the consistent flow of sharp, well-choreographed action sequences more than compensates for the story’s occasional lack of focus.
What immediately sets the film apart is its old-school charm. Instead of modernizing the story to reflect current social trends, Karate Kid: Legends embraces a more traditional, no-frills approach that channels the essence of the 1984 original, The Karate Kid. However, this nostalgic tone comes at a cost — the plot can feel overly simplistic and relies heavily on familiar tropes, such as Li freezing during his brother’s attack or Victor losing to an illegal move in the ring.

Although Aramis Knight has limited screen time, he leaves a lasting impression as a fierce and intimidating rival.
