Kanneda (JioHotstar) Review :-

In the JioHotstar series Kanneda, Parmish Verma portrays Nirmal Chahal, or Nimma, a young man whose intense desire to prove himself and defy the “goras” drives his every action. Quick-tempered and impulsive, Nimma often acts without considering the consequences, living life on the edge while harboring a deep resentment toward the racism he faces daily. While his frustration with prejudice in his new home is understandable, Nimma’s animosity toward white people feels equally intense, creating a contradictory dynamic that may confuse viewers. His volatile, reckless behavior has become a familiar trope in OTT shows, and it’s one that’s starting to feel tired and overused.

The series primarily plays out as a crime thriller, focusing on drug dealer Sarabh’s reign of terror and the expanding drug market, with Nirmal caught in its web. As previously mentioned, Nirmal is a loose cannon, willing to do anything to make a name for himself and chase his dreams. However, it’s hard to truly support him when he quickly becomes a drug dealer without a second thought. The plot follows a familiar pattern we’ve seen countless times before, with the protagonist being drawn into shady dealings and eventually suffering the consequences. Nirmal willingly steps into this mess, making it difficult to feel sympathy for his struggles as the story unfolds.

The series’ predictable plot and clichéd characters are its biggest drawbacks. While the story is intriguing, it’s one we’ve seen many times before. There’s no moment that will truly shock you, as it doesn’t make any attempt to reinvent itself. It’s also hard to emotionally connect with a character who seems to lack a moral compass and takes pride in being part of a criminal organization. At times, the sequences feel disjointed, and the pace stalls midway through the series.

That said, the performances across the board are strong. Parmish Verma delivers a solid portrayal of Nimma, convincingly embodying the character throughout, regardless of his flaws. Arunoday Singh shines as Sarabjit, though we’ve seen him in similar roles before. Ranvir Shorey plays Bajwa, the shadowy criminal kingpin, and while he’s excellent, his character feels like a repeat of roles he’s played in the past. Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub, as cop Sanjay Rawat, stands out as the series’ only morally grounded character, grappling with his own issues. Their contrasting personalities create an interesting dynamic that keeps things engaging.

Final Thought

I don’t find Kanneda particularly memorable, as it treads familiar ground that we’ve seen in previous shows. The Punjabi diaspora in Canada has been explored so extensively that it no longer feels fresh or original, leaving us with yet another version of the same story. While the performances help elevate the series and prevent it from becoming a complete bore, they can only do so much to make it stand out.
