‘Kalki 2898 AD’ opens with a compelling portrayal of the aftermath of the Mahabharata war, where Lord Krishna cursed Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan) with immortality. This sets the stage for a fictional narrative deeply entrenched in Hindu mythology and part of a star-studded cinematic universe. The story revolves around the prophesied tenth avatar of Lord Vishnu, expected to arrive on a white horse, signaling the end of the Kali Yuga.

Writer-director Nag Ashwin weaves his tale within this rich backdrop, setting the groundwork for future installments in this expansive universe. Utilizing his imaginative prowess, Ashwin immerses the audience in a visually stunning world. This is where the film truly excels—the creation of a vivid and captivating environment. Assisted by cinematographer Djordje Stojiljkovic, Ashwin transports viewers to Kasi, the sole surviving city ruled by the tyrannical Commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee) and governed by the enigmatic God King Supreme Yaskin (Kamal Haasan), who resides in the formidable Complex. In this bleak society, fertile women face death while men endure enslavement. Amidst this darkness, a glimmer of hope emerges through Bhairava (Prabhas) and a resilient group of rebels from Shambhala. Their mission takes a pivotal turn when they rescue SUM80 (Deepika Padukone), the anticipated avatar bearer, from the clutches of the Complex.

The story, though straightforward, gets entangled in a web of too many characters and subplots that often diverge from the main narrative. Nag Ashwin’s plot frequently veers off course, leading to moments of confusion and impatience as viewers wait for the story to regain focus. The first half particularly suffers from this issue, especially concerning Prabhas’ character. Attempts at humor, including those by veteran Brahmanandam (playing Bhairava’s landlord Rajan), fall short, much like the underdeveloped romantic subplot with Roxie (Disha Patani) that feels unnecessary.

Fortunately, the film gains momentum in the second half with the reintroduction of Amitabh Bachchan. The veteran star impresses with his infectious energy, particularly shining in high-octane action sequences. Despite the abundance of special effects and computer animation, Bachchan injects a sense of realism into his portrayal of Ashwatthama, showcasing the character’s formidable power convincingly. Deepika Padukone delivers a nuanced performance, skillfully portraying a subdued character destined for eventual strength and significance.

South superstar Shobhana provides solid support in her role as the wise Mariam. Saswata Chatterjee occasionally veers into caricature with his portrayal of Commander Manas. Kamal Haasan once again delivers a performance that is uniquely compelling and spine-chilling. Special appearances by Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur, Dulquer Salmaan, S.S. Rajamouli, and Ram Gopal Varma make brief but memorable impacts.

Nitin Zihani Choudhary’s production design deserves praise for creating a visually captivating landscape that enriches the film’s immersive experience. While Santhosh Narayanan’s music score falls short of expectations, the background score effectively enhances the narrative, particularly during pivotal moments.

‘Kalki 2898 AD’ emerges as a grand visual spectacle that immerses viewers in a meticulously crafted universe. The film’s high visual quality effectively distracts from its notable flaws, drawing the audience into the atmospheric realms of Kasi and the Complex. Beyond its cinematic appeal, it presents a concept ripe for sparking imaginative journeys. If you relish epic conflicts among deities, forces of good and evil, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ delivers a rewarding audio-visual experience, albeit demanding a measure of patience.
