Kaalidhar Laapata (Zee5) Review :-
When doctors offer no solution for Kaalidhar’s (Abhishek Bachchan) worsening memory loss and hallucinations beyond costly medication, his family starts plotting to get rid of him. As the eldest of four siblings, Kaalidhar is taken to the Kumbh Mela by two younger brothers who plan to ‘lose’ him there. They even file a complaint at the lost and found office to avoid suspicion—but provide no real help, ensuring he remains missing. Alone and unable to remember his own name or address, Kaalidhar struggles to find his brothers and somehow makes it back to their tent, only to overhear their relief at having ‘lost’ him due to the burden of his medical expenses. Heartbroken, Kaalidhar boards the next bus away from them and takes shelter at a temple near a village.

It is here that Kaalidhar meets Ballu (Daivik Bhagela), an 8-year-old orphan, and the two form an unlikely friendship. Street-smart and worldly-wise, Ballu takes Kaalidhar under his wing, while Kaalidhar begins to look out for Ballu in return. As they spend more time together, their bond deepens, growing almost like that of a father and son. They even create a wish list of things Kaalidhar has always wanted to do and start checking them off one by one. Meanwhile, Kaalidhar’s brothers, overwhelmed by debt, realize they must find him to fix their financial troubles—and they return to the lost and found officer, Subodh (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), to persuade him to resume the search.

Kaalidhar Laapata is the Hindi adaptation of the acclaimed 2019 Tamil comedy-drama K.D., both directed by Madhumita. While the core storyline remains largely intact, there are notable differences. In the original, KD (Mu Ramaswamy) is an 80-year-old man whose children plot euthanasia to claim his property. In the Hindi version, Kaalidhar is a middle-aged man battling memory loss. For the most part, Kaalidhar Laapata hits the right emotional notes, but it stumbles in places. The ‘wishlist’ Kaalidhar creates with Ballu lacks the emotional weight of an elderly man ticking off his bucket list. Additionally, Kaalidhar’s memory loss feels uneven throughout, and his reason for parting ways with his love, Meera (Nimrat Kaur in a special appearance), in his youth doesn’t come across as entirely believable.

Final Thought
That said, the film beautifully captures the heartwarming friendship between Ballu and Kaalidhar, making it a true delight to watch. Daivik Bhagela shines as Ballu, perfectly blending confidence, energy, and warmth for the role. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub delivers a sincere performance as the detective determined to find Kaalidhar. However, it is Abhishek Bachchan’s nuanced portrayal that truly anchors the film—effortlessly conveying Kaalidhar’s vulnerability and quiet strength, which lie at the story’s core.
Overall, Kaalidhar Laapata is a touching slice-of-life drama that concludes on an uplifting note, making it a worthwhile and heartfelt watch.
“Kaalidhar Laapata” is now streaming on Zee5.
