Comic books serve as sacred texts for devoted fans who have immersed themselves in every page and illustration. These enthusiasts fiercely protect their beloved characters, resisting any attempts to distort the stories they hold dear. For filmmakers to succeed in this realm, they must possess the genius of someone like Todd Phillips, who revisits the past with his storytelling, or the cleverness of Matt Reeves, who weaves narratives that resonate with established styles—much like how The Penguin channels The Sopranos.

In Joker (2019), Phillips transported us to the ’80s, placing Arthur in Arkham Asylum as he awaits trial. The notion of Joker being scrutinized by the law while simultaneously embarking on a love story with Harley Quinn is both audacious and intriguing. In Gotham, it’s rare for criminals to testify, especially with Harvey Dent present to challenge them. Phillips bravely ventures into this uncharted territory. Alongside his writing partner, Scott Silver, he crafts a narrative that shifts between the courtroom and Arkham, creating a world where Arthur navigates the complexities of love in the most unlikely of settings. Just as he emerges from a session with his attorney, he catches a glimpse of her, singing with the choir.

If you’re anticipating a ruthless Arthur who will continue his violent spree, this isn’t that film. Instead, it’s an unapologetic love story about two deeply troubled individuals who are passionately devoted to each other. Todd Phillips delves into a man grappling with his inner demons, including bipolar disorder and mental illness, drawing inspiration from the comic Joker: Me and My Shadow. But does this exploration diminish his criminality? Not at all.

The film embodies the concept of Folie à Deux, where two people share similar delusions. Here, Arthur finds his Lee—a woman so infatuated with the Joker that she wants him to embrace that persona completely, never allowing Arthur to resurface. Their romance has a distinct Imtiaz Ali flavor, so recognizable that Indian audiences won’t need to look closely to spot the parallels. She’s enamored by the man she saw on TV during a violent act, but when she encounters the more subdued Arthur, she’s uninterested. Their love is tumultuous, yet it’s the only kind they know. They even dream of escaping their chaos to build a MOUNTAIN together. Imtiaz, were you involved?

Joker: Folie à Deux shouldn’t be seen as a sequel if you approach it as a standalone film. It revisits the central conflict of the first movie, taking us on a journey that explores the psyche of a man who’s likely the most troubled person in the room, all while he observes how the world’s opinions of him are shaped and broadcast. Todd Phillips constructs a fragile dam with Arthur, one that threatens to burst—and eventually does. When it breaks, Arthur takes control of his own fate. This is where the sequel’s writing falters. After Joker reclaims Arthur, spurred by Lee, we anticipate a return to the chaotic figure who once killed a talk show host. However, Folie à Deux never fully allows him to descend into madness again; instead, it offers a fleeting moment of breakdown that pulls him back to Arthur in a haphazardly placed sequence.

The film often accelerates when it should take its time. The twenty minutes leading up to the climax feel like a disjointed montage, culminating in a conclusion that comic fans may debate for years. While the climax certainly elicits gasps, it doesn’t negate the fact that pivotal moments—like the systemic abuse Arthur endures, Lee’s revelation of her love for the Joker, and Arthur’s grim realization that his only escape lies in becoming the Joker—unfold too quickly and lack the weight they deserve. These crucial scenes miss their intended impact.

Do I really need to highlight how extraordinary Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are? Phoenix fully understands what it means to be the Clown Prince of Crime and masterfully embodies the character, ensuring that Joaquin never breaks through his performance. He elevates the entire film to new heights. Lady Gaga matches his energy with impressive confidence, portraying a woman who is utterly convinced that a brutal killer is her ideal partner—what a remarkable performance!

Brendan Gleeson as Jackie adds an intriguing layer with his unpredictability, making his presence one of the film’s highlights.

Lawrence Sher’s cinematography is exceptional, particularly in the sequence where Arthur and Harley briefly escape from the Asylum. That entire scene is brilliantly captured. Another standout moment occurs when the lights go out in the Asylum, revealing Arthur’s silhouette as he lights a cigarette—pure brilliance. The music skillfully mirrors the chaotic inner world of delusional Arthur, enhancing the film’s atmosphere. Even when the writing struggles to balance the musical elements with the storytelling, the songs and scores remain beautifully composed and executed. Hildur Guðnadóttir deserves commendation for highlighting the musical talents of both Gaga and Phoenix.

Joker: Folie à Deux may not reach the same heights as Joker (2019), but it aims to tell a story that stands apart from its predecessor. While it stumbles and drags at times, it remains bold and heartfelt, showcasing two of the year’s most remarkable performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga!
