Jewel Thief - The Heist Begins (Netflix) Review :-

The biggest issue with Hindi heist thrillers today is their lack of imagination—they often follow tired formulas that fail to leave a lasting impression. Netflix’s Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins is no exception, falling into the same trap as many others in the genre: it plays it safe, sticking to the generic and predictable. There’s a well-known Bengali proverb, “গল্পের গরু গাছে চড়ে,” which loosely translates to “even a cow can climb a tree in a story.” This film takes that sentiment to heart—only here, the narrative leaps so far from logic that it feels like the impossible actually happens (though not literally, of course).

Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins follows a master jewel thief assigned to steal the Red Sun from a heavily guarded art gallery—but the film never strays from the most predictable path imaginable. Despite the premise, it’s so devoid of intelligence that I found myself questioning my life choices every few minutes. Simply put, the film is mind-numbingly dumb. Events unfold without rhyme or reason, lacking both coherence and suspense. It often feels like Saif Ali Khan just flashes a smirk and the universe bends to his will.

From start to finish, we watch the slick Rehan inch closer to the coveted diamond, while Jaideep Ahlawat’s Rajan Aulakh lurks with an exaggerated glare. Aulakh sports mismatched pupils—perhaps a lazy attempt to dial up the menace—and throws in domestic abuse for extra villain points. Once the film gets past its routine setup, it dives headfirst into a barrage of over-the-top, illogical stunts, all set to a background score that suspiciously echoes Casino Royale’s “You Know My Name.” It’s all style with little sense—and even the style feels borrowed.

None of the heists in Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins are even remotely exciting or original—they’re dull, predictable, and completely lacking in adrenaline. Instead of building tension or offering clever twists, the film serves up one absurd plot point after another. At one point, the crew hijacks a commercial plane like it’s just another day at the office—because apparently, in this universe, hijacking doesn’t come with consequences like, say, being labeled a terrorist.

Maybe the film never intended to be taken seriously. Perhaps it’s meant to be a light, throwaway two-hour distraction—something you keep on in the background while chatting with friends or scrolling your phone. And judged by those low expectations, it’s… passable.

But what’s truly aggravating is how condescending the film is toward its audience. Plot twists (if you can call them that) are spoon-fed and immediately explained in painfully obvious detail—often within seconds of being revealed. There’s no room for interpretation, no challenge for the viewer. Jewel Thief doesn’t just hold your hand—it drags you along, assuming you couldn’t possibly connect even the simplest dots on your own.

Jewel Thief - The Heist Begins (Netflix) Trailor :-

Every character in Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins feels like a bland, recycled template—stripped of depth, uniqueness, or any hint of personality. It’s as if the film took stock versions of every hero and villain we’ve seen over the years, ran them through a photocopier, and drained them of anything remotely interesting.

Rehan has the ever-predictable “daddy issues,” Rajan is your standard-issue bad guy with nothing new to offer, and Farah exists solely for aesthetic purposes—essentially a glorified prop with no agency or arc. Even Kunal Kapoor’s character follows the same uninspired formula, offering nothing more than a generic presence that fades into the background. There’s just no one to care about, root for, or even be intrigued by.

Final Thought

Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins genuinely gave me a headache. It embodies everything that’s currently going wrong with Netflix India—uninspired storytelling, lackluster execution, and a refusal to push creative boundaries. It’s no wonder international content continues to outshine our offerings.

Sure, it might rack up views and land on the trending list, but don’t let that fool you—there’s absolutely nothing here you haven’t seen a dozen times before. The real disappointment lies in how little the film even tries to be memorable. It coasts on clichés without a hint of ambition, leaving behind an experience that’s instantly forgettable.
