While navigating her new life, Lily unexpectedly crosses paths with her first love, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), causing a flood of childhood memories to resurface—some cherished, others better left in the past. At the core of this story is the power of choice. As the narrative weaves between past and present, we witness Lily’s struggle to reconcile the life she dreams of with the one she’s determined to leave behind.
You don’t have to be Sherlock to figure out what “It” represents in the title. The responsibility lies with you. You can break the cycle of generational trauma by refusing to accept the disrespect that has become normalized in the family. No matter how deep the love, domestic violence must be a non-negotiable boundary. Anubhav Sinha’s Hindi film Thappad powerfully conveyed this message.

Actor-director Justin Baldoni delivers a faithful adaptation that is melancholic, provocative, empowering, sensual, and introspective. Although the story follows a predictable path, it unfolds with the intensity of a slow-burn thriller. Cinema often uses attractive men to challenge our biases toward physical beauty, with the fervor surrounding Penn Badgley in You being a prime example. Baldoni skillfully navigates this dynamic, exploring it without ever excusing or romanticizing the violence, though at times, the narrative veers into soapy territory. The result is an emotionally weighty experience, far from a lighthearted watch.
Blake Lively takes the lead in this film but unfortunately falls short of giving the character of Lily the depth she deserves. A story as layered as this needed a more compelling actor, one who could fully inhabit the role rather than seeming like a bystander in their own narrative. Despite her striking presence, Lively’s performance feels limited, which robs the film of its emotional richness. The result is a portrayal that, while visually appealing, fails to evoke the deep emotions, empathy, or strength the story demands, leaving the overall experience somewhat superficial.
The film seems more preoccupied with Blake’s beauty than with her ability to breathe life into the character. If you’re not seeking relatability, you might find yourself watching this one more for its glamour than for its depth.
