Inspector Zende (Netflix) Review :-
After seeing a portrayal of Charles Shobhraj in this year’s Black Warrant, we encounter him again in the latest crime thriller Inspector Zende. The film follows a Mumbai cop determined to capture the elusive serial killer after his daring escape from Tihar Jail. However, unlike Vikramaditya Motwane’s brilliant series, Inspector Zende takes a lighter, more comedic approach, juggling crime and humor with a much jokier tone.
The film is inspired by the real-life exploits of Madhukar B. Zende, who famously captured Charles Shobhraj not once (in 1971) but twice (in 1986). It leans towards a light-hearted tone, making for an enjoyable watch, with Manoj Bajpayee emerging as one of the film’s standout elements. Following Zende’s pursuit of Bhojraj after his escape from Tihar Jail, the Netflix film delivers a somewhat thrilling experience, though it prioritizes charm and humor over intense drama.
In that sense, the film doesn’t take itself too seriously, offering a captivating glimpse into history with a playful touch. Bajpayee’s portrayal of Zende is particularly endearing as he juggles his personal life and police work, all while determined to restore peace to the city and keep criminals off the streets.
However, some parts of the show come across as half-baked and incomplete. Jim Sarbh’s portrayal of the mysterious and deadly Shobhraj (or Bhojraj) feels like he’s trying too hard. While I’m usually a fan of Sarbh, this time his performance didn’t quite convince me. And whoever picked that wig for him deserves some blame—it doesn’t budge an inch and honestly feels like a crime against humanity.
Inspector Zende (Netflix) Trailor :-
Moving on, since the film is based on true events, it’s no surprise that the story isn’t overly complex. However, the lighthearted, jokey tone sometimes undercuts the tension and keeps the film from feeling truly thrilling. If you’re unfamiliar with the story, it’s easy to predict that Zende will catch Bhojraj in the end, and aside from a few standout moments, the film feels quite predictable. Some of the humor comes off as silly—while I did chuckle occasionally, it wasn’t enough to balance out how heavily the film leans into comedy.
Final Thought
Inspector Zende is a decent watch. If you’re looking for something light-hearted and entertaining that won’t leave you feeling down, this could be a good choice. That said, it’s not particularly memorable—having seen similar stories before, and with the comedy often feeling out of place, it struggles to stand out.
“Inspector Zende” is now streaming on Netflix.
