‘Inn Galiyon Mein’ is a heartfelt attempt to convey a message of brotherhood. Set in the narrow alleys of old Lucknow, the film depicts a Hindu-Muslim community that has coexisted peacefully for generations—until the arrival of a politician shatters their harmony. Political undertones are subtly woven into the story, explored through elements like an interfaith love story, an India-Pakistan cricket match, and a wise elder who reflects on the community’s changing dynamics over time.

Set in a lower middle-class neighborhood in Lucknow, the story centers around two close-knit lanes where people of different faiths live together in harmony, offering each other support in times of sorrow and celebrating Holi with the same joy as Eid. Hariya (Vivaan Shah) and Shabbo (Avantika), both vegetable vendors, share this vibrant locality. Hariya, captivated by the social media ‘reels’ trend, also harbors a crush on Shabbo. However, Shabbo, an orphan, consistently rebuffs his advances. The area is home to Mirza (Jaaved Jaaferi), a respected elder whose tea stall serves as a hub for conversation and thoughtful insights. Trusted by everyone across communities, Mirza becomes a figure of wisdom. Trouble begins when Ajay Tiwari (Sushant Singh), a local politician with aspirations to become an MLA, arrives to campaign for the upcoming elections. Sensing his ulterior motives, Mirza warns the community, but the events that unfold lead to consequences that will change everything.

Director Avinash Das authentically brings the film’s setting to life, making it feel both grounded and believable. However, a strong opening is marred by the reliance on clichéd tropes as the story progresses. By portraying Mirza as a poet and a staunch advocate for secularism, Das subtly positions him as a symbol of India’s core values. His death serves as a poignant commentary on what is being lost in the process. The character of Bhanga further emphasizes this theme, highlighting how those who speak wisdom are often dismissed as unstable in today’s world. While the film effectively delves into themes of brotherhood and division, a considerable portion of the story is spent on the love angle, which feels unnecessary, especially given the film’s tight 100-minute runtime.

Jaaved Jaaferi shines as Mirza, delivering a convincing and heartfelt performance filled with sharp, witty one-liners. As the wise tea stall owner who becomes a victim of fake news, his character serves as a voice of reason in the story. Vivaan Shah captures the lovelorn Hariya, while newcomer Avantika portrays Shabbo—both bring depth to their roles. However, their Lucknowi diction occasionally feels inconsistent and could have been more polished. Sushant Singh effectively brings to life the scheming politician Ajay Tiwari, with his scenes alongside his henchmen standing out as some of the film’s most memorable moments, skillfully blending menace with subtle humor.

Final Thought

‘Inn Galiyon Mein’ is a sincere attempt, but it offers little in terms of fresh appeal, as similar themes have been explored in numerous films before. While it has its moments, the average screenplay holds it back from making a stronger impact. Rather than delivering a gripping narrative, the film functions more as a social commentary on cultural and religious dynamics. Given the potential of the subject matter, the film would have benefitted from a more innovative script, as it ultimately relies on familiar tropes.
