When the first season of ‘Indian Matchmaking’ debuted on Netflix in 2020, self-proclaimed matchmaker Sima Taparia’s cringe-worthy and regressive approach to matchmaking brought a sense of shock. Her notions of adjustment and compromise, though problematic, aligned with the age-old Indian tradition of arranged marriages. Yet, the show’s normalization of these ideas by a middle-aged matchmaker quickly became fodder for jokes and memes.

Now in its third season, ‘Indian Matchmaking’ shows no signs of evolution. Sima Taparia continues to dispense trite and obvious statements about people and their preferences, leaving viewers questioning what makes her any more of an expert in matchmaking than the typical nosy neighborhood aunties. Despite gaining confidence and a brash demeanor on camera, thanks to the show’s popularity, it hasn’t made the series any more captivating or entertaining. This season feels the most repetitive and tedious, lacking novelty and substance. The stories of Sima Taparia’s elite clientele, both old and new, appear increasingly contrived, giving the impression of a poorly scripted reality show.

The only novelty this season brings is Sima aunty’s revamped appearance, adorned in trendy clothes and a chic makeover. The inclusion of a brief scene featuring Sima aunty meeting young entrepreneurs involved in online matchmaking feels forced, with more emphasis on idolizing Sima aunty than fostering meaningful dialogue about matchmaking. Referred to as the ‘matchmaking royalty’ by KJ, the founder of the London-based dating app ‘Dil Mil,’ Sima aunty even volunteers to find a match for him. She also reveals her struggles in finding a suitor for her own daughter.

Despite glimpses into her travel routine and a brief flashback into her past, the series fails to provide clarity on Sima Taparia’s fee structure or the technical aspects of her profession. While her NRI clients seem enamored by the brand ‘Sima Taparia from Mumbai,’ it’s evident that the series has reached its saturation point and needs to evolve or conclude.
