Netflix’s In the Mud is a gritty survival story set within a women’s prison, where trust is scarce and danger lurks around every corner. While the themes of sisterhood, crime, and resilience aren’t exactly groundbreaking—especially for viewers familiar with the genre—the series offers its own take on familiar territory. It kicks off with eight women involved in a transport accident on their way to prison, an event that sets the tone for the bonds, tensions, and shifting dynamics they’ll face behind bars.
Interestingly, that initial incident ends up having little impact on the story as it unfolds—despite being the most compelling part of the show. It’s a letdown, especially since it seemed like it would play a larger role in shaping the women’s experiences behind bars. Instead, the series shifts focus to the corruption and toxic power dynamics within the prison, where money rules and influence can buy almost anything. Aside from the lack of freedom to leave, the inmates appear to have access to nearly everything imaginable, blurring the lines between prison and lawless playground.
Shifting the focus from El Marginal’s testosterone-fueled chaos to a women’s prison does offer a fresh angle—especially for fans of the original. However, if you’re expecting a radically different experience, you might be disappointed. The series sticks closely to the same intense, gritty themes, only this time adding a heavier layer of sexual exploitation, which is disturbingly frequent throughout. There’s a significant amount of nudity and sex, some of which may feel excessive or gratuitous. While it may aim for realism, it often crosses the line into discomfort, raising questions about what’s actually necessary for the story.

Is In the Mud the best story out there? While it’s certainly engaging and intense enough to keep you hooked on the fates of the incarcerated women, it doesn’t quite break new ground. The power struggles and high-stakes moments add depth beyond a typical prison drama, but ultimately, the series feels familiar throughout, lacking a truly fresh or innovative edge.
