iHostage (Netflix) Review :-

Netflix’s thriller iHostage recreates a chilling 2020 incident in which a man took a Dutch tourist hostage inside an Apple store. The film does a solid job of staying true to the facts and visually immersing viewers in the tense atmosphere, making it feel as though the events are unfolding in real time. However, it struggles to fully capture the raw horror and mounting anxiety of being trapped in such a high-stakes situation.

Soufiane Moussouli delivers an intense start as the protagonist, who walks into the store to buy AirPods and finds himself with a gun to his head within minutes. But after this shocking moment, the film slows down, with long stretches of Ilian staring blankly out of the store window, confused and immobilized. Instead of heightening the fear, these moments drag, leaving the audience with little sense of tension. Ilian’s character, who should be central to the suspense, becomes forgettable—sometimes feeling harmless, other times just oddly detached, which makes it difficult to fully engage with his plight.

The film juggles several characters, but none of them, including Ilian, are remotely compelling. Despite staying true to the facts, it fails to generate any real tension because there’s no emotional investment in these characters. The lack of backstory or any meaningful exploration of who these people are leaves the audience feeling detached. Instead of genuine fear, we’re left with petty arguments and stale interactions that quickly become irritating. After 30 minutes, I found myself counting down the minutes until it ended, as the pacing became increasingly tedious.

With little to no tension, the film ultimately falls flat, offering nothing beyond a basic portrayal of hostage negotiations. There are a few moments—particularly when the police attempt to free some of the hostages—where the film gains a bit of momentum. However, these moments are rare, and the rest of the plot feels contrived, relying on forced conflicts rather than real challenges faced by the characters. The final scene of the hostage situation, however, delivers the suspense that the rest of the film lacks, providing a fleeting moment of the tension you’ve been waiting for.

While the performances are solid across the board, there’s not much happening at any given moment to make you sit up and take notice. It feels more like a poorly executed drama with sporadic thrills, and none of the well-known actors are given enough material to truly shine. The biggest issue, however, lies with Ammar, the antagonist, who comes off as more irritating than threatening. He’s neither scary nor intimidating, often resorting to shouting in an attempt to make an impact. This undermines any sense of danger for the hostages and makes it hard to take the story seriously. The only real highlight comes when Marcel Hensema delivers a standout moment, angrily confronting an influencer—both relatable and spot-on. Unfortunately, this character doesn’t have much else to offer, and the film misses the opportunity to make better use of its cast.

Final Thought

Despite its thriller label, iHostage fails to evoke the tension and suspense that such a story should naturally generate. While there are a few moments that manage to keep you on edge, the film mostly relies on simply presenting the facts without adding any real depth or excitement. It feels dull, uninspired, and lacking in creativity, ultimately leaving much to be desired.
