Idli Kadai Review :-

From his debut film Pa. Pandi, Dhanush has shown a clear affinity for stories rooted in sentimentality and nostalgia. Idli Kadai leans heavily into these emotions—sometimes to the point where it can feel a bit overwhelming.

The film opens with a prologue where Dhanush introduces us to why Sivanesan’s (Raj Kiran) idli shop means so much to his son, Murugan (Dhanush). However, when we first meet Murugan, his dreams are worlds apart from his father’s simple philosophy. While Sivanesan finds fulfillment running his small village idli shop, Murugan aspires to a flashy life filled with big houses, cars, and wealth. This ambition takes him to Bangkok, where he works for multi-millionaire Vishnu Vardhan (Sathyaraj), is engaged to his daughter Meera (Shalini Pandey), and endures constant torment from Vishnu’s spoiled son, Ashwin (Arun Vijay). But fate pulls Murugan back to his village, where he reluctantly takes over his father’s beloved idli shop — a place cherished by the local community. Meanwhile, a wounded Ashwin is hell-bent on destroying him at any cost.

Much like his previous film Nilavukku En Mel Ennadi Kobam, which was described simply as “A usual love story,” Dhanush keeps expectations modest with Idli Kadai. As noted in the opening credits, the story is inspired by a place and people he encountered in his youth. Unsurprisingly, the plot feels carefully crafted but heavily reliant on familiar tropes we’ve seen time and again. The film unfolds with predictable, one-dimensional characters—the saintly parents, the exaggerated villains, the supportive school crush, the scheming local, the corrupt yet soft-hearted cop, and more.

While melodrama can be effective when done sincerely, here it comes across as calculated and overly predictable. Even the central theme—Murugan’s commitment to his father’s pacifist ideals and refusal to respond to Ashwin’s aggression with violence—isn’t explored with much depth or nuance. In its attempt to stay grounded, the film also slips into regressive territory, guilt-tripping those who leave their roots for better opportunities and casting technological progress in a negative light.

Idli Kadai Trailor :-

That said, Dhanush meets the modest bar he’s set for himself. There are genuine emotional moments, and the cast delivers performances that breathe life into their otherwise simple characters. The romance between Murugan and Kayal (Nithya Menen) stands out, offering a fresh take reminiscent of the Kamal Haasan-Revathy dynamic in Thevar Magan—another story about a young man with big dreams, engaged to a city woman, who returns to his roots and falls for a village belle. The film’s sincerity and conviction help gloss over many of its shortcomings. Yet, it’s hard to shake the feeling that with his talent, Dhanush could aim higher as a storyteller instead of settling for nostalgia-driven tales.
