House of Spoils (AmazonPrimeVideo) Review :-
Whenever people choose to move into a haunted house, I can’t help but wonder why anyone in their right mind would decide to start a new family—or, in this case, a restaurant—with a spooky housemate. In this film, Ariana DeBose’s character, Chef, makes the baffling choice to lure patrons to a remote location for a culinary experience, despite the house’s loud and eerie quirks. It’s a puzzling decision, but I suppose horror movies wouldn’t exist without such illogical choices.
As Hiral Sen points out to Chef at one point, the film feels safe and derivative, lacking any real soul. It relies on clichéd jump scares and uninspired depictions of the restaurant business. The portrayal of restaurant ownership falls flat, making you long for the tension of The Bear instead. And while there are some interesting moments, the film opts for the usual goofy antics, which ultimately disappoint. It plays it far too safe and fails to stand out among the countless other horror films trying to evoke genuine fear.
Much of what unfolds in the movie isn’t really horrifying or scary—instead, we spend a lot of time watching Chef search for a menu and chase after a bunny. I’ll admit, I nearly got lost in the details as Chef pieced together the menu of her dreams, which is truly mind-blowing. Unfortunately, this engaging moment is short-lived before the film dives back into mediocrity. The main issue seems to be that the film can’t decide what it wants to be, leaving it to meander aimlessly while banging doors to rouse us from our slumber.
House of Spoils (AmazonPrimeVideo) Trailor :-
Honestly, the movie shines when it focuses on the menu, ingredients, and kitchen dynamics. But it stumbles badly when it veers into supernatural territory, presenting odd, tedious sequences that are so clichéd they’re eye-roll inducing. The plot becomes increasingly nonsensical, with random events that lack coherence. There’s also a discussion about witches and blending feminine energy with nature, which has a nice sentiment—essentially encouraging us to embrace who we are. While that message is warm, the absence of genuine thrills really dampened the experience and never quite let up.
Final thought
House of Spoils has its moments of awe and empowerment, especially toward the end. However, it lacks genuine thrills and chills; a few door slams won’t satisfy most viewers. While the film attempts to blend the beauty and tension of creating delicious food with the eerie atmosphere of a haunted house, it often leaves us feeling confused rather than engaged.
