HIT MAN (Netflix) “Hit Man” is a captivating film that delivers nearly two hours of pure entertainment. This offbeat romantic comedy, inspired by a magazine article about a versatile man, enchants with its clever script that weaves a simple yet engaging narrative. At its core, the movie revolves around a college professor who leads a double life as an undercover operative for the New Orleans Police Department, making it a delightful watch.
With its intriguing premise, “Hit Man” excels in developing its characters and unfolds a straightforward yet compelling storyline. It pays homage to classic noir films that feature hitmen while skillfully blending elements of quirkiness, comedy, romance, and a hint of sexual tension.
The story follows Gary Johnson (played by Glen Powell), a Sociology and Psychology professor at the University of New Orleans. When not tending to his cats or teaching students, he secretly works for the local police. Stepping into the role of a fake hitman after Jasper (Austin Amelio), a police department colleague, is sidelined for 120 days, Gary ensures that those planning murders are apprehended.
Things take a turn when Madison Masters (Adria Arjona) approaches Gary to eliminate her husband. Intrigued yet sympathetic, Gary advises Madison to reconsider, suggesting she start afresh away from her husband. However, complications arise when Madison’s husband is found dead, leading Jasper to grow suspicious and launch an investigation that disrupts Gary’s carefully managed double life.
One of the most remarkable aspects of “Hit Man” is its ability to maintain a realistic tone despite its fantastical and implausible premise. The screenplay is enriched with witty and humorous dialogue, adding an extra layer of charm to the film.
