When Hellbound season 1 premiered, it captivated audiences with its chilling depictions of supernatural beings condemning individuals to hell. The storyline was fresh and compelling, prompting us to reevaluate notions of good and evil in society. Now, with Hellbound 2, the series shifts its focus toward politics and the power struggles among various factions, which may come as a surprise to some viewers.
In this new season, the world remains gripped by the terror of sudden, violent events where condemned individuals are dragged to Hell. Following Chairman Jung Jin-su’s mysterious resurrection, chaos ensues. The narrative centers on Min Hye-jin and her group, Sodo, as they work to protect people from the New Truth Church and the militant Arrowhead cult. The return of the resurrected raises even more questions, complicating the authorities’ efforts to regain control.
This time, the series delves deeper into power dynamics, exploring how different groups vie for influence amid the turmoil. As government officials and religious leaders grapple with the implications of the resurrections, the story illustrates how fear and belief can be easily manipulated for control.
Jung Jinsu, the enigmatic leader from the first season, returns in an unexpected way. Kim Sung-cheol’s portrayal reveals a more manipulative side of his character this time around. It’s fascinating to see him navigate the shifting power dynamics, but the mystery and impact of his character felt stronger in the previous season.

Instead of relying on horror, the series explores the complexities of power and manipulation, highlighting how easily vulnerable individuals can fall prey to cult ideologies. Moon Geun-young’s brief but impactful role as O Ji-won perfectly encapsulates this, illustrating how people can become ensnared in dangerous beliefs.

For me, this season was both engaging and somewhat disappointing. Nonetheless, the strong character development and rich themes kept me invested in the story.
