There are clever comedies, and then there are so silly that you’re not sure if you’re laughing at the story or just how ridiculous it is. Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, directed by Kavi Shastri and Vir Das (who also stars), falls into the latter category. The film begins in Goa in 1991, where flashy don Jimmy Mario (Aamir Khan) confronts two British spies but accidentally kills their house help, leaving behind her baby. This marks the end for Jimmy but the start of his daughter’s future as Mama.
The story follows Mama, who kidnaps a scientist to create a formula that promises lighter skin in just 21 days. But she isn’t just after science—she also wants revenge for her father’s death at the hands of Happy’s adoptive fathers, the British spies. Fast forward to 2025, and we meet Happy as he tries to assemble a gun—without a trigger—hinting at the chaos that’s about to unfold.
The film turns the spy genre into a comedy full of satire. Happy defies the usual alpha-male spy image by dancing in ballet shoes and cooking fancy meals. Morse code is replaced with chai slurps, and instead of glamorous femme fatales, there’s Rupa (Mithila Palkar), an item dancer whose moves are electrifying. Even torture scenes are funny, with three tone-deaf goons singing nonstop.

How long can mispronunciations and a mangled firangi accent keep you laughing? Quite a bit, thanks to writers Das and Amogh Ranadive. The humor is boosted by minor characters and running gags: a random gora appearing whenever Happy says “Tom” instead of “tum,” an elderly waiter moving slower than Internet Explorer, and Happy dodging Mama’s attacks with Bollywood dance moves, including a perfect Chhaiyya Chhaiyya step. The zany soundtrack by Das, Parth Parekh, Shalom Benjamin, and others, with tracks like Phukt Apan, Chaanta Tera, and Cous Cous, perfectly matches the film’s action-comedy vibe.
Final Thought
Vir Das is the clear standout of the film. From a clueless man who forgets he’s brown to a spy learning tricks from Bollywood films and delivering lines like “Maine pulley baar masseuse kiya hai,” he is consistently hilarious. Mona Singh shines as Mama, the crime boss with a rolling pin and a love for both cooking and crime. Sharib Hashmi adds laughs as the local spy coordinator Geet, especially when he yells “Daddy!” every time Happy channels Shah Rukh Khan. Mithila Palkar matches the energy, and Aamir Khan delivers a memorable comic cameo. Imran Khan, playing international supermodel Milind, also impresses, with his role giving a cheeky nod to Delhi Belly and Pappu Can’t Dance Saala.
The film doesn’t have a serious plot, but it doesn’t need one. Its quirky characters and absurd situations create a fast-paced, nonstop laugh fest that keeps viewers entertained from beginning to end.
