Grotesquerie, the latest series from Ryan Murphy, seems intent on testing viewers’ tolerance for the macabre. The two episodes released so far are not only unsettling but also intensely graphic, featuring four brutal massacres—each one more disturbing than the last. Watching these scenes requires a certain resolve, yet the show effectively pulls viewers in with its slow-burning, intricately crafted horror thriller. It bears a strong resemblance to the American Horror Story anthology but feels more refined, boasting a richer narrative structure. Additionally, viewers may detect influences from David Fincher’s films, Se7en and Zodiac, throughout the series.
The story begins with the gruesome murder of the Burnside family—parents and their three children. Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts), a tough and alcoholic investigator, is assigned to the case, but the killer has left no trace aside from cryptic biblical symbols. Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond), a nun who also works as a reporter for a church-funded publication, arrives to cover the story. She attempts to interpret the biblical clues, though her insights remain only partially formed. As three more similar massacres occur in quick succession, the pressure mounts on Lois, driving her to become increasingly obsessed with identifying the killer and enlisting Sister Megan’s help. Micaela Diamond shines as Sister Megan, providing excellent support and showcasing great chemistry with Nash-Betts. In fact, Diamond steals the spotlight in the first two episodes with her vibrant portrayal. A standout moment occurs during her scene with the priest at the restaurant, where they discuss their favorite serial killers, highlighting the series’ sharp writing. Lesley Manville also makes a notable impact as Nurse Redd, bringing an unsettling quality to her character.
