Griha Laxmi (Zee5) Review :-

‘Griha Lakshmi’ unfolds in the improbable setting of Betaalgarh, where viewers are asked to suspend disbelief to follow its outlandish plot. The series revolves around Laxmi (Hina Khan), a maid in multiple households, and her husband Milan (Manish Raisinghan), who works as a peon at the local police station to repay debts. Laxmi’s brother-in-law is a constable there. Struggling to lift her family out of poverty, Laxmi seizes an opportunity when she discovers gunny sacks filled with marijuana. This discovery thrusts her into the dangerous world of drug dealing.

In Betaalgarh, the drug trade is overseen by local kingpin Vikram Kandawal (Dibyendu Bhattacharya) and his dealer Surya (Hariish Kumar), under the remote command of Karim Qazi (Chunky Panday) from Dubai. As the drug problem intensifies, senior police officer Balram Tokas (Rahul Dev) is called in to crack down on the burgeoning illegal trade. Unbeknownst to both the police and the drug mafia, Laxmi adopts the alias Rani and devises her own plans, harboring surprises of her own.

This crime drama turns out to be a disappointment, filled with scenes that often unintentionally border on hilarity. The cringe-worthy dialogues sometimes provoke laughter for all the wrong reasons. Despite featuring a cast of talented actors, many appear to be going through the motions, lacking genuine engagement. The only saving grace is its fast pace, with events unfolding quickly and each episode running around 30 minutes, packed with action. However, the series fails to live up to its potential. It could have drawn inspiration from shows like ‘Griselda’ and ‘Queen of the South,’ which adeptly portray women ascending from humble origins to become formidable drug lords. Despite a promising premise, the lackluster execution diminishes any real enjoyment from the series.

Hina Khan delivers a heartfelt performance as Laxmi/Rani, though her efforts are hampered by an uninspired script that fails to elevate her character. Dibyendu Bhattacharya brings an intimidating presence to the role of drug lord Vikram Kandawal, yet his character descends into caricature. Rahul Dev shines as the standout among the cast, portraying the super cop Balram Tokas with a convincing mix of grit and authenticity, especially in his portrayal of the desi Haryanvi dialect. Chunky Panday, making a cameo appearance in the final episode as Karim Qazi, the Dubai-based drug lord, makes a memorable appearance but lacks the necessary gravitas for a character overseeing a vast drug empire. Director Rumaan Kidwai, making his debut after assisting filmmakers Mani Ratnam and Shaad Ali, had a promising storyline at his disposal but fails to fully capitalize on its potential.

Final Thought

‘Griha Laxmi’ misses the mark, failing to achieve realism and depth. The transformation of Laxmi from a maid to a drug seller lacks development and feels overly contrived, making it difficult to fully invest in her journey. The premise, where Laxmi easily steals two gunny sacks of marijuana and teams up with a perpetually stoned rapper, strains credibility. The series grapples with believability issues, diminishing the potential impact of what could have been a compelling narrative.
