The crime drama begins with Will Shelly (Himesh Patel), a cop who relocates to a small island town with his pregnant wife, Paige (Lily James), hoping for a peaceful family life. He’s partnered with Terry (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a cocky, street-smart officer who offers Will some questionable advice—like “don’t kill anyone unless you have to”—while spending his afternoons with his girlfriend on duty. When Will responds alone to a call, he accidentally kills a high-society woman (Traci Lords) in her luxurious home. In a panic, he and Terry work together to cover up the crime, but their plan takes an unexpected turn when they stumble upon a stash of stolen money, which they decide to keep for themselves. As news of the loot spreads, various townspeople—including a Colombian thug and an Irish hitman—begin hunting for the cash, setting off a chaotic series of events.

The film kicks off with a strong, promising start, blending outrageous humor with a sudden, brutal, and bizarre death that sets the tone for the chaos to follow. From there, the story is packed with eccentric characters, wild situations, and total mayhem. Writer Mike Vukadinovich and director Potsy Ponciroli keep the audience hooked with a fast-paced first half that delivers dark humor at its finest. However, the tone shifts midway, turning darker and more somber, with only a few laughs sprinkled in. This change in mood slows the pacing, and when the story does pick up again, the plot feels rushed.

While the premise begins with intrigue, it quickly turns predictable, with characters betraying each other and bodies piling up. The screenplay isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but the film is filled with some of the most outlandish characterizations. From Wallace, the seafood businessman (Blake Nelson), and his secretary Deborah (Nina Arianda), to the quirky masseur Keith (Simon Rex), the Colombian hitman (José María Yazpik), the Irishman (Jim Gaffigan), and even a minor character like Bobette (Joey Lauren Adams), the diverse cast adds layers of humor and chaos that elevate the film’s narrative.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt truly shines in his role, bringing depth to his character as a sharp-witted, loudmouthed cop who can charm his way through any situation while making it clear he’s not someone to be messed with. His chemistry with Himesh Patel is spot-on, with their comic timing creating a believable and entertaining dynamic between their unlikely partnership. Lily James and Uzo Aduba, playing Captain Murphy—the film’s only noble character—also deliver strong, memorable performances.

The narrative has its share of plot holes and takes some bold liberties with the story. Despite these flaws, the film remains engaging in parts, particularly thanks to its neo-noir treatment of themes like greed, ambition, survival, and grief. The dark humor and colorful characters keep things entertaining, making it a solid one-time watch. The ending, in particular, is sure to take you by surprise.
