In Joko Anwar’s dark and gritty psychological horror film, the unfolding events are captivating and intense. The very idea of entering a grave with a rotting corpse sets the stage for a chilling narrative. The heartbreak intensifies as we witness the siblings’ lives unravel after their parents are killed by a deranged factory worker, adding a profound layer of trauma to their journey.
Grave Torture transcends the typical Indonesian horror film filled with jump scares. It delves into dark themes of guilt, trauma, and the search for purpose, leaving viewers feeling deeply unsettled throughout. We follow Sita as she embarks on a quest to demonstrate that religion often serves as a crutch for human wrongdoing. In her mission to lie in the grave of a sinful man, she aims to prove that the feared torment of the afterlife isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Sita’s determination is palpable from her youth, making her odd journey compelling as she resolutely pursues her unconventional goal.
However, the story begins to lose momentum midway through, as Sita’s life takes unexpected turns while her brother Adil and his trauma receive insufficient attention. The film veers into more traditional horror territory, relying on clichés that detract from its psychological depth, leaving viewers less engaged with the storyline than anticipated. These familiar tropes diminish the film’s psychological impact, prompting questions about their relevance in the broader narrative.
Sita’s moral dilemmas and quest for understanding are complex and compelling, particularly in the first half. Yet, this intensity wanes in the second half as she seems to lose her drive to prove that religion is merely a tool for manipulation. The latter part of the film shifts toward jump scares, introducing a series of ghostly encounters that overshadow the earlier, more introspective themes. Gone are the haunting reminders of sin and personal failure; instead, we’re presented with a barrage of ghosts popping up unexpectedly, including one that emerges from Sita’s nightmares into our reality. This sharp tonal shift between the first and second halves creates a jarring experience, leaving viewers feeling confused and unsatisfied with the disjointed story.

In the finale of Siksa Kubur, Sita confronts her demons—though it’s unclear which ones. The messaging in this part of the film feels scattered, sometimes suggesting that everyone should be terrified of grave torture. While there’s room for discussion about confronting the past and accepting personal responsibility, I can’t help but question why Sita is linked to her parents’ deaths.
As the story progresses toward its conclusion, it becomes increasingly incoherent, leaving me frustrated with the narrative. Setting aside ethical and moral concerns, Sita’s journey raises confusing questions about the truth of religion and whether demons truly torment sinful souls in their graves. Moreover, it’s unclear how HR would react to her entering a client’s grave—my guess is they wouldn’t say much, as she seems to have the invincibility of a main character.
Final Thoughts
While the movie begins with a strong, determined protagonist seeking to prove something scientific, Grave Torture ultimately devolves into familiar horror clichés that linger throughout. Despite its initial promise of thought-provoking themes, the film falls short in its psychological depth. What starts with intriguing potential ends in disappointment, leaving viewers with a mix of conflicting emotions and an unimpressive conclusion.
