In “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” Callie (Carrie Coon) faces eviction, compelling her to relocate with her children, Trevor and Phoebe, to her late father’s farmhouse in the quiet town of Summerville. As they settle in, Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) befriends local teens while the reserved Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) connects with a classmate known as Podcast (Logan Kim). Meanwhile, their teacher, Mr. Grooberson (Paul Rudd), investigates the town’s mysterious tremors while screening old horror films for his students. Soon, Phoebe and Trevor unearth their grandfather’s long-concealed secrets hidden within the farmhouse.

Directed by Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman, “Afterlife” navigates a delicate balance between forging a new path for the franchise and paying homage to its nostalgic roots. While the film introduces new characters and emotional arcs, it heavily relies on nostalgia to resonate with longtime fans. Mckenna Grace shines as Phoebe, channeling the awkward charm of Dr.Egon Spengler, portrayed by the late Harold Ramis.

Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon deliver strong performances, complemented by Paul Rudd’s trademark charm. Logan Kim impresses as the endearing Podcast.

While the film’s pacing and tone differ from its predecessors, it invests ample time in character development during the first two acts. However, the third act feels slightly disjointed, with some scenes appearing hastily stitched together. Nevertheless, the film’s poignant conclusion, along with mid and end-credit scenes, offers satisfying closure for longtime Ghostbusters fans. Jason Reitman’s tribute to his father’s legacy may resonate deeply with franchise enthusiasts but could potentially alienate new audiences.
