Alisha, a yoga instructor, and Zain, a successful real estate professional, are instantly drawn to each other upon their first encounter. They are engulfed in a whirlwind of passion until the harsh realities of life come crashing down upon them. As their relationship deepens, they find themselves navigating a precarious path. Zain is engaged to Alisha’s cousin Tia (Ananya Panday), while Alisha is in a long-term live-in relationship with her partner of six years, Karan (Dhairya Karwa). Can their clandestine romance endure the complexities and challenges of life?

Infidelity is just the tip of the iceberg in their tumultuous journey. With “Gehraiyaan,” director Shakun Batra delves into uncharted territory in Hindi cinema — domestic noir. He explores the distances between individuals, the tensions between children and parents, and the financial constraints within families — themes rarely explored in mainstream Hindi films. Clearly influenced by Woody Allen’s psychological thriller “Match Point” (2005), Batra’s exploration of intimacy transcends the physical realm. Can one be emotionally vulnerable with those they love? And if so, does the world punish them for their vulnerability and moments of weakness?
Alisha, haunted by anxiety and burdened by the traumas of her troubled childhood, struggles to free herself from the demons that haunted her mother. We often carry the burden of our parents’ views on love, don’t we? Batra’s unfiltered examination of relationships and dysfunctional families, as seen in his previous film “Kapoor & Sons,” is commendable. He delves into complex human behavior and its repercussions through a narrative that is challenging to convey.
Deepika Padukone delivers heart-wrenching performances effortlessly, portraying Alisha’s turmoil with raw emotion. Siddhant Chaturvedi also shines in his portrayal of Zain, a character that is deeply conflicted and multi-dimensional. Both actors excel in roles that demand emotional intensity and restraint. The casting is spot-on for this love story that unfolds quietly like a thriller, drawing viewers into its dark and enigmatic world. The silence of the characters resonates against the backdrop of crashing waves, creating a sense of impending doom. The cinematography and sound design further enhance the film’s subtly dramatic ambiance, with scenes punctuated by pauses and silences that invite interpretation.
However, the film’s length and lack of clarity are noticeable drawbacks. The story meanders in the latter half, leaving viewers questioning its direction. With a runtime of 2 hours and 28 minutes, the film feels somewhat monotonous and tiresome at times. Nevertheless, “Gehraiyaan” offers moments of poignant introspection and depth, making it worth exploring for those seeking something beyond the ordinary.
