French Lover (Netflix) Review :-
Dating man-babies is a skill few possess, but in French Lover—named after one of Abel’s own commercials—we see the remarkably patient Marion navigating a relationship with the wildly immature and self-absorbed Abel. Despite his fame, Abel brings little else to the table. He’s a full-blown brat, hurling insults at anyone in his path. One particularly jarring moment comes early on, when he refers to patients at a public hospital as “bottom feeders” simply because he wasn’t taken to a more upscale facility. That scene alone sealed my opinion of the film—and nothing that followed managed to redeem it.
Abel’s bratty behavior persists throughout the film, as he drifts through life throwing tantrums with little justification and zero self-awareness. Despite a brief separation, the film wraps up with a neatly packaged happy ending, reuniting Abel and Marion for their supposed ‘happily ever after.’ But it begs the question—what exactly holds this relationship together? Does Abel ever show real growth or make any effort to change? And what of Marion’s own dreams and aspirations? Instead of evolving, she seems sidelined—left to settle for a man who behaves more like a petulant child than a partner.
As you watch the film, uncomfortable questions begin to linger—most notably, why Marion is stuck with someone as incapable and self-absorbed as Abel. The premise is so thin that you find yourself yearning for anything—any twist or turn—that might offer Marion a more deserving partner. Abel, for all his fleeting charm in front of the press, fails miserably at the basics of partnership. There’s nothing sweet about a man who can’t handle simple chores or consider his partner’s needs. What’s worse is how unattractive it becomes when he consistently dismisses Marion’s desires, making her loyalty feel baffling.
Sara Giraudeau brings quiet complexity to Marion, but the script gives her little room to breathe. She exists almost entirely in service of Abel’s narrative, which is frustrating given how much potential her character holds. A flicker of independence surfaces toward the end, but it’s quickly snuffed out by an infuriatingly neat conclusion that solves nothing and leaves her arc feeling unfinished.

I enjoyed Omar Sy and Sara Giraudeau in their roles, but that’s where my appreciation ends. It was hard to connect with their characters because the relationship never truly feels romantic. Abel’s poor communication and lack of responsibility are framed as somehow appealing, which feels baffling and unconvincing. The result is an odd, unsatisfying story that leaves a sour taste long after the credits roll.
Final Thought
French Lover leaves much to be desired. Dreamy guys are nice, but that’s not the only quality a partner should have. Knowing the difference between a zucchini and a cucumber—without your spouse having to hold your hand—is pretty crucial, especially if you want to maintain any sense of a normal life!
