Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein feels like the culmination of his cinematic journey. Renowned for uncovering beauty in darkness, del Toro immerses himself in Mary Shelley’s world and makes it unmistakably his own. This is more than a tale of science gone awry—it’s a story of grief, guilt, and the messy search for belonging. Set in a cold, rain-soaked Europe, even the light seems fragile and fleeting. From the opening scene, it’s clear that del Toro loves monsters and misfits—not to terrify, but to show them as souls yearning to be understood. While the film is visually grand and Gothic, at its core, it explores the cost of playing god and the deep pain of rejection.

The story opens in the frozen Arctic, where Captain Anderson (Lars Mikkelsen) and his crew discover a near-death Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac). As they bring him aboard, Victor begins to recount his tale. A brilliant but tormented scientist, he is obsessed with conquering death. With funding from a mysterious patron, Harlander (Christoph Waltz), and the assistance of his younger brother William (Felix Kammerer), Victor secretly collects corpses and pieces them together into a living being.
