First Copy (MxPlayer) Review :-

Set in the pre-digital era when VCRs ruled and pirated tapes circulated like contraband, First Copy delivers a gritty, atmospheric portrayal of a lesser-known chapter in Mumbai’s history. Director Farhan P. Zamma’s vision shines through, focusing on the unseen players working behind Bollywood’s scenes—those who hustled not for fame, but for survival. The show thrives on its vivid sense of place. From the narrow alleys of Byculla to the smoky video parlors, First Copy paints a textured, chaotic Mumbai steeped in nostalgia and moral ambiguity. The production design does much of the heavy lifting, fully immersing viewers in a world where dreams—like pirated tapes—are easily copied and corrupted.

In his debut, Munawar Faruqui delivers a surprisingly grounded and empathetic performance. Arif isn’t a hero—he’s impulsive and sometimes selfish—but Faruqui makes him relatable, even in his flaws. Saqib Ayub provides quiet strength as Pravin, serving as a steady moral anchor. Krystle D’Souza (as film star Mona) and Ashi Singh (as Arif’s devoted wife Afreen) bring emotional depth, while Gulshan Grover and Meiyang Chang add gravitas to familiar archetypes.

Despite these strong performances and the authentic setting, First Copy doesn’t fully realize its potential. Spanning ten episodes, the narrative occasionally meanders, revisiting the same emotional beats and losing momentum when it should build tension. The writing hints at complexity but often stays on the surface—especially with Arif’s internal struggles, which feel diluted as the story progresses.

That said, the show deserves praise for its realistic portrayal of crime—not as glamour, but as a desperate act of rebellion and survival. It strips away the sparkle of the film industry to expose its scars and hidden flaws.

Final Thought

First Copy is a watchable, well-acted series that captures the gritty spirit of 90s Mumbai and the human toll of piracy. Though uneven in pacing and occasionally missing emotional depth, it shines with its authenticity, rich texture, and Munawar Faruqui’s impressive debut. Not flawless, but definitely worth watching.
