Amidst the fervor of India’s Republic Day, Siddharth Anand’s latest offering emerges as a quintessential patriotic action spectacle. The film dazzles with breathtaking aerial maneuvers executed with finesse by the cast, keeping audiences gripped with suspense. Sukhoi planes executing daring stunts set the adrenaline pumping as viewers are introduced to the formidable Air Dragons.
The squadron comprises Meenal Rathore, known as Minnie (Deepika Padukone), Shamsher Pathania, nicknamed Patty (Hrithik Roshan), Taj (Karan Singh Oberoi), and Basheer (Akshay Oberoi), under the command of Rakesh ‘Rocky’ Jay Singh (Anil Kapoor). The palpable tension between Rocky and Patty, along with allusions to a tragic past incident, foreshadows the drama and thrill to come.
Director Siddharth Anand, renowned for his mastery in action films, treats audiences to slick sequences and captivating cockpit drama. The skillful choreography of stunts and fight scenes by action directors Se-yeong Oh, Parvez Shaikh, and Sunil Rodrigues keeps viewers engrossed from beginning to end. Cinematographer Satchith Paulose deserves praise for infusing the film with gravitas, capturing the majesty of landscapes amidst the mountains and valleys. However, the predictability and clichés at various points in the narrative diminish its impact. The storyline relies on familiar tropes of a menacing Pakistani militant plotting to harm India, countered heroically by the Air Dragons. Messages about religion and patriotism, albeit noble, feel repetitive and uninspired.
Despite the film’s drawbacks, songs, backstories, and romantic angles seem more like distractions than narrative enhancers. The theme of patriarchy and a woman’s struggle in a male-dominated field feels contrived, contributing to uneven pacing, particularly in the slower second half. Yet, when the action intensifies, viewers remain glued to the screen.
Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone deliver stellar performances, showcasing their chemistry and emotional depth on screen. Roshan shines as a confident and rebellious squadron leader, while Padukone complements him with her prowess. Anil Kapoor delivers a dependable performance, embodying the complexities of his character effortlessly. Karan Singh Oberoi and Akshay Oberoi hold their own amidst the ensemble cast. Rishabh Sawhney portrays the antagonist, Azhar Akhtar, with conviction, although his portrayal lacks the menace required for the role.
The strategic scenarios and Indian Air Force’s tactical prowess add to the film’s allure, making it a thrilling watch. While “Fighter” doesn’t offer much novelty in its plot, its engaging action sequences will undoubtedly leave action enthusiasts impressed.
