Sunny (played by Shahid Kapoor) grows up harboring resentment towards the world after being abandoned by his father and raised by his maternal grandfather, Nanu (portrayed by Amol Palekar). With only his best friend Firoz (Bhuvan Arora) for companionship, Sunny transitions from creating abstract paintings to engaging in criminal activities in a bid to save Nanu’s publication ‘Kranti.’ As Sunny discovers his knack for designing counterfeit notes, he unwittingly delves deeper into the world of crime, ultimately establishing a thriving syndicate.

“Farzi” delves into a rarely explored theme on screen, and creators Raj and DK spare no effort in portraying the intricate details of counterfeiting, from production to distribution. While the series maintains a realistic tone, it occasionally relies on cinematic conveniences that strain believability. Despite the implausible scenarios, the show’s strong characters carry the narrative forward effectively. Each character is well-defined, although some storylines, such as that of task force officer Michael Vedanayagam (played by Vijay Sethupathi), feel forced and slow down the pace.

The transition from the big screen to streaming allows for greater runtime, but judicious editing could have enhanced the show’s pacing. Nevertheless, “Farzi” remains an engaging watch, thanks to its constant unpredictability and thrilling narrative. The production values are commendable, with impressive cinematography and use of outdoor locations.

The performances are a highlight of the series. Shahid Kapoor shines in his OTT debut, portraying the complex character of Sunny with finesse. Vijay Sethupathi delivers a compelling performance as the determined officer, while Kay Kay Menon impresses as the flamboyant counterfeit kingpin Mansoor. Bhuvan Arora is a revelation as Sunny’s loyal friend Firoz, and Amol Palekar brings depth to his portrayal of Nanu. Raashi Khanna shines in her role as the ambitious professional Megha, despite the limited female presence in the male-dominated narrative.

Although the series includes explicit language typical of OTT shows, the dialogues are relevant and suit the characters well. Overall, “Farzi” is a gripping saga of crime and deception, with its strengths outweighing its flaws.
