In Everybody Loves Me When I’m Dead, desperation and greed spiral out of control, destroying the lives of several people who simply can’t live within their means. The story follows Toh and Petch, two individuals driven by the hope of a better life for themselves and their loved ones, who decide to steal money from a dormant bank account—until the rightful owners come to claim their share.
The film shines a light on the mounting desperation faced by many as jobs grow scarce and AI increasingly replaces human workers. It’s a harsh reality that viewers will find all too relatable. The immense pressure placed on the working class is something we witness daily, and the film captures this struggle vividly. Against this backdrop, the story unfolds into a gripping tale where crime thrives as more people’s morals begin to unravel.
Toh and Petch come across as hardworking and loyal employees—until one of their colleagues is fired because technology is replacing his job. For Toh, that fear quickly becomes very real, as he’s convinced his own position is next, threatening his ability to provide for his daughter. The pressure to keep up appearances builds, and that’s when everything starts to shift. The man who once refused to betray his job begins to question the fairness of his loyalty going unrewarded. The sense of helplessness is felt strongly in every scene, as one misstep quickly spirals into another, escalating the danger. However, the film does suffer from moments that unnecessarily drag out the runtime. In particular, the entire sequence with Sek felt forced and out of place. A tighter, more focused edit would have served the film better. At two hours, the pacing occasionally falters, and there are stretches where the story loses momentum, making it harder to stay fully engaged.
