In today’s age, people are willing to go to great lengths to achieve instant fame and wealth, often leveraging social media platforms as a means to achieve their goals. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with this pursuit, “Escaype Live” sheds light on the darker side of such apps, emphasizing that behind the allure of entertainment lies a business-oriented approach. From the outset, the show makes it clear that “business comes before entertainment.”

Siddharth Kumar Tewary’s series delves into the lives of various individuals associated with the video-streaming social media app, Escaype Live. The narrative primarily revolves around app users who push their limits in hopes of winning the grand prize. Drawing parallels to popular apps like TikTok, Dubsmash, and Instagram Reels, the series explores the experiences of both the app developers—led by Ravi Gupta (Jaaved Jaaferi) and Gia Bose (Waluscha D’Souza)—and top content creators, including Fetish Girl (Plabita Borthakur), Darkie (Sumedh Mudgalkar), Aamcha Spider (Ritvik Sahore), Meena Kumari (Rohit Chandel), and Dancing Rani (Aadyaa Sharma).

Each character is depicted with depth, portraying their emotions and vulnerabilities as they navigate the app. Dancing Rani aspires to transition into internet stardom through her dance performances, while Fetish Girl, facing discrimination due to her Northeastern background, maintains a double life to support her family. Darkie pushes boundaries in pursuit of popularity, while Aamcha Spider seeks to break free from his humble beginnings. Meena Kumari, portrayed by Rajkumar, grapples with societal norms and acceptance of his transgender identity. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they share a common goal of advancing in life.

Co-written by Jaya Mishra and Siddharth Kumar Tewary, the series unfolds over nine fast-paced episodes, each lasting approximately an hour. While the narrative is engaging, the abundance of characters and their intertwining stories may overwhelm viewers at times. Nevertheless, the series keeps audiences guessing about the outcome of the competition, building anticipation for the climactic finale.

In terms of performances, Siddharth delivers a restrained yet impactful portrayal of Krishna, the conscientious app moderator. Sumedh Mudgalkar impresses as the cunning Darkie, while Aadyaa Sharma shines with her captivating dance performances as Dancing Rani. Plabita Borthakur excels as Fetish Girl, evoking sympathy for her character’s struggles. Swastika Mukherjee, as Hina’s boss Mala, delivers a convincing performance, as does Ritvik Sahore in his role as Parkour.

“Escaype Live” briefly touches on social issues such as inequality and transgender acceptance, but its focus remains primarily on the characters’ journeys within the app. While the plot may feel crowded with numerous characters and their backstories, the series ultimately captures the audience’s attention with its engaging narrative and relatable themes.
