Emergency Review :-
Emergency attempts to recreate one of India’s most significant and ominous political events, the Emergency (1975-1977), with director and lead actor Kangana Ranaut at the helm. Written by Ranaut (story), Ritesh Shah (screenplay and dialogues), and Tanvi Kesari Pasumarthy, the film draws inspiration from Coomi Kapoor’s book The Emergency and Jaiyanth Sinha’s Priyadarshini. Spanning from 1929 through four decades of Indian history, it covers pivotal events such as Independence, the Indo-China War of 1962, the Assam crisis, Indira Gandhi’s ascent to power, and the Indo-Pak war of 1971. However, the screenplay feels disjointed, with historical moments stitched together rather than flowing naturally. Some scenes are notably graphic and sensationalized, particularly those depicting wartime atrocities against women and infants.

While striving to depict pivotal moments from Indira Gandhi’s tenure, the film often falls short in providing adequate background or context for key events and characters, such as Pupul Jayakar (played by Mahima Chaudhary), a close confidante of Gandhi. This leaves audiences grappling to connect the dots. Even the portrayal of the Emergency—the film’s central focus—feels rushed, as do depictions of critical events like the tragic massacre of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family.
Emergency does have its share of impactful moments. One standout scene features Indira Gandhi’s bold confrontation with US President Richard Nixon before the Indo-Pak War in 1971. Her resolute reply, “You have weaponry, we have courage,” stands out, complemented by the meticulously crafted war sequence, for which cinematographer Tetsuo Nagata deserves commendation.

The music resonates with the narrative’s tone, featuring Singhasan Khaali Karo (sung by Udit Narayan, Nakash Aziz, Nakul Abhyankar) with an anthemic feel, and Ae Meri Jaan (composed by Arko, featuring Hariharan) as a standout powerful composition. Kangana Ranaut shines as Indira Gandhi, particularly in the latter half of the film, especially in scenes following the lifting of the Emergency, her encounters with philosopher J Krishnamurti (played by Avijit Dutt), and her notable visit to Bihar’s Belchi village at age 60 atop an elephant.
Anupam Kher delivers a compelling performance as Jaiprakash Narayan. Shreyas Talpade’s portrayal of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, while serviceable, lacks conviction. Milind Soman impresses in his brief role as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, while Vishak Nair leaves a strong impact with his portrayal of the menacing Sanjay Gandhi. Mahima Chaudhary brings gravitas to her role as Pupul Jayakar.
Emergency Trailor :-
Final Thought
Emergency suffers from an overly dramatized approach and one-dimensional portrayals, which detract from its effectiveness. The lack of narrative fluidity and contextual depth undermines its attempt to depict a crucial chapter in Indian history. Nevertheless, the film does contain some impactful sequences.
