Ek Thi Begum Season 1 (MxPlayer) Review :-

As the number of content creators has surged in the digital space, the production of web series has been growing at a similarly rapid pace. The expanding array of projects, diverse budgets, high-profile stars, and compelling narratives have made the market incredibly vibrant. On my page, I’ve celebrated standout series like Mirzapur, Asur, Special Ops, Samantar, State of Siege: 26/11, and Panchayat—productions that have left a significant mark on viewers. However, I missed discussing some notable Indian web series such as Sacred Games, Lakhon Mein Ek, Tripling, Made in Heaven, Delhi Crime, and Kota Factory.

Recently, I discovered a web series that premiered on April 8, 2020, titled Ek Thi Begum. Despite its impressive and engaging content, it hasn’t received the attention it deserves. In this review, I’ll highlight why Ek Thi Begum is an exceptional web series that deserves more recognition.

Ek Thi Begum Season 1

MX Player remains a largely unexplored platform for many, including myself, who initially used it solely to watch Swwapnil Joshi’s Samantar. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover Ek Thi Begum, a compelling 14-episode series created by Sachin Darekar. The series revolves around Ashraf Bhatkar, also known as Sapna (Anuja Sathe), who embarks on a quest for vengeance after her husband is murdered by a gang. Set in 1980s Mumbai, a period marked by rampant organized crime, the show follows Ashraf’s transformation into the vengeful Sapna as she takes on the city’s most dangerous criminals, including the notorious don Maqsood (Ajay Gehi). The cast also features Chinmay Mandlekar, Rajendra Shisatkar, Resham, and Abhijeet Chavan.

Inspired by the true events of Sapna Didi, the show offers a powerful and well-crafted narrative. It effectively portrays Sapna’s evolution from a serene wife to a fierce avenger, seamlessly capturing the contrast between her idyllic past and the perilous path she undertakes. While the premise may not be groundbreaking, the series excels in its artistic and technical execution, delivering a gripping and impressive portrayal of a woman’s quest for justice.

Ek Thi Begum Season 1 (MxPlayer) Trailor :-

In terms of performances, Ek Thi Begum is undeniably anchored by Anuja Sathe, who delivers an exceptional portrayal of Ashraf Bhatkar, also known as Sapna. Sathe’s dedication to embodying her character is evident, as she skillfully conveys a wide range of emotions—from helplessness and love to fear and authority—with remarkable authenticity.

Ankit Mohan also offers a commendable performance in his role.

Ajay Gehi, who plays the formidable don Maqsood, seems to struggle with his portrayal. Despite having a potentially powerful role, his performance falls short of expectations, appearing somewhat overblown.

Chinmay Mandlekar shines as the no-nonsense cop. Although his character may be a fictional creation, Mandlekar approaches the role with nuance and sensitivity.

Rajendra Shisatkar navigates his character competently, adding depth to the narrative.

Resham delivers her role with a compelling blend of conviction, confidence, and sarcasm, fitting perfectly with her character’s demands.

Abhijeet Chavan, portraying the corrupt cop, excels in his role. His performance is so convincing that every appearance on screen evokes a strong reaction from viewers.

When it comes to direction and technical aspects, Sachin Darekar excels in recreating the late 70s and early 80s Bombay with remarkable authenticity. He skillfully blends drama, romance, and action, enhancing Ek Thi Begum with layers of pain, passion, betrayal, and loyalty, creating a narrative that’s both compelling and immersive.

While the editing could benefit from some refinement, the cinematography is outstanding. The story, punctuated by thrilling moments, keeps viewers engaged throughout.

Overall, Ek Thi Begum is a masterfully crafted entertainer. Darekar delivers a well-balanced crime thriller, with Anuja Sathe captivating audiences in her role, exuding a fierce grandeur. I’m rating this series 3.5/5. It’s an adrenaline-pumping, electrifying experience with moments that are truly spine-chilling.
