In this innovative home makeover show, deserving families experience the surprise of a lifetime as their run-down houses undergo radical transformations in just a few hours. Described as part home renovation and part heist movie, the series promises to elevate ordinary homes from ho-hum to extraordinary in a single day.

The premise is straightforward: families or friends nominate individuals for a home renovation, typically someone known for their kindness and selflessness in the community. From these nominations, the show selects deserving candidates to receive a complete home transformation.

What sets the show apart is its tight timeframe of only 12 hours or so to renovate every aspect of the house. While the homeowners are taken away for the day by friends or family, the building team works tirelessly to overhaul the home before their return in the evening.

However, the renovation process actually begins around three months prior, as the team designs and prepares all necessary elements in advance. On the day of action, they arrive fully equipped to install complete kitchen walls or entire bathrooms as needed, ensuring a seamless transformation.

The excitement of rushing to complete tasks on time and the emotional thrill of the big surprise reveal at the end make for compelling viewing. However, I found myself disagreeing with some of the design team’s choices in certain houses. For instance, one house with blue exterior walls and a red door didn’t necessarily need to be repainted in darker hues.

Simple rearrangements of furniture and minor interior changes could have sufficed. As I watched the series in its entirety, it seemed that the focus was more on showcasing creativity and lavishness by installing countless new features rather than enhancing the existing elements of the house or working with what was already present.

This raised questions about the durability of these installations. While traditional house renovations often take months to complete, the rapid transformations in a single day seem almost too good to be true. There have been instances in similar shows where rushed construction due to time constraints resulted in poorly built homes, leading to issues and structural failures down the line.

While I don’t intend to nitpick, I wish these shows provided more insight into the behind-the-scenes process and the sources of funding for such expensive renovations. Imagine the homeowners being presented with a hefty bill for all the construction work after the cameras stop rolling.

In summary, Instant Dream Home is undoubtedly poised to be popular, like many others in its genre. There’s an undeniable charm in witnessing transformations, whether it’s of a person or a house. The genuine joy experienced by the homeowners is heartening and restores faith in the goodness still present in the world.

Each episode dives right into the action, sparing viewers from lengthy introductions and monologues. However, there’s a sense of anxiety whenever host Danielle is tasked with something, as it often leads to unexpected challenges. The show may inspire viewers with ideas for their own home decor and design projects.

Instant Dream Home is now streaming on Netflix.
