Set in the 1980s, “Dil Bekaraar” unfolds the lives of the Thakur family residing in the affluent Hailey Road of New Delhi. The narrative revolves around the trials of the patriarch, Justice L N Thakur (portrayed by Raj Babbar), and his wife, Mamta (played by Poonam Dhillon), along with their five striking yet troubled daughters — each with her distinctive traits.
The eldest daughter, Anjini (played by Sukhmani Sadana), perpetually seeks attention despite being married. Binodini (portrayed by Anjali Anand) is preoccupied with her share of the family property. Chandu, who eloped with a foreigner on her wedding day, adds to the family’s upheavals. Debjani, known as Dabbu (portrayed by Sahher Bambba), seizes a career opportunity as an English newsreader on DD News, while Eshwari (played by Medha Shankar), the youngest, grapples with her impending future after school. Amidst the domestic chaos, a tender love story blossoms between the protagonists, Dabbu and Dylan Singh Shekhawat (played by Akshay Oberoi), an investigative journalist and the son of Justice Thakur’s close friend.
Beyond Dabbu and Dylan’s romantic narrative, the series delves into the trials faced by the Thakur sisters, including Anjini’s marital discord, Binny’s husband’s financial woes, and Eshu’s teenage love life. The storyline also encompasses the amusing dynamics of their beloved Chachaji, AN Thakur (portrayed by Pankaj Kalra), and his wife, Bhudevi Thakur (played by Padmini Kolhapure), who harbors suspicions of her husband’s involvement with their house help, Dulari. Additionally, Gulgul (played by Aditya Kapadia), their sensitive son, becomes a focal point for his parents’ aspirations for him to toughen up.
Directed by Habib Faisal (known for films like “Do Dooni Chaar” and “Ishaqzaade”), this 10-part series transcends a mere love story or chick-lit drama. It intertwines familial struggles, romance, and political backdrop, set against the backdrop of the Bhopal gas tragedy. While the initial episodes adeptly introduce the diverse characters, the latter part of the series, focusing on the tragedy, slows the pace, feeling somewhat forced. Nevertheless, the inclusion of old melodies like “Duniya Mein Logon Ko” enhances the nostalgic ambiance of the narrative.
Akshay Oberoi impresses as a journalist driven by ambition, while Sahher Bambba portrays Dabbu’s strength and conviction with grace. Their on-screen chemistry epitomizes the romance of the 1980s era. Raj Babbar, Poonam Dhillon, and Padmini Kolhapure deliver noteworthy performances, infusing depth into their respective roles. However, Chandrachur Singh’s portrayal as Health Minister Hardik Motla lacks the impact due to the crowded ensemble cast.
Whether familiar with the novel or not, “Dil Bekaraar,” with its blend of family drama and romance amidst the backdrop of the 1980s, evokes nostalgia and captivates with its charm. It’s a delightful watch!
