Detective Sherdil (Zee5) Review :-
If clichés were clues, Detective Sherdil would crack its case within the first five minutes. Sadly, this murder mystery relies so heavily on predictable genre tropes that even its twists come across as painfully obvious. Directed by Ravi Chhabriya, the film aims for a sharp blend of whodunit and dark comedy but ultimately feels like a string of missed opportunities.

Diljit Dosanjh stars as Detective Sherdil, a sharp-witted investigator who cracks the case but not without showcasing his penchant for theatrics, mouth organ solos, and an overused charm. His tone remains cheeky even in the face of danger—an approach that might have worked if the humor had landed. Despite being billed as a dark comedy, the film struggles to evoke even a faint chuckle.
The story centers on the murder of Pankaj Bhatti, who shockingly leaves his entire fortune to his pets and a loyal employee, much to the dismay of the Bhatti family. Unsurprisingly, tensions run high, and every family member is a suspect—from the perpetually sneering son Angad (Sumeet Vyas) to the frosty, flamboyant wife Rajeshwari (Ratna Pathak Shah), whose character is so reminiscent of Maya Sarabhai it borders on parody. Banita Sandhu plays Shanti, the deaf-mute daughter who brings a calming presence amid the chaos—and is clearly daddy’s favorite.

The problem isn’t just that the suspects are exaggerated caricatures—it’s that they’re painfully predictable. There’s no real mystery or depth to unravel, and Sherdil himself seems oddly indifferent to the seriousness of the case. His constant smirks and cheeky remarks make it clear even he knows the investigation is far too straightforward. In fact, this feels less like a “whodunit” and more like a “howdunit,” with the answer practically handed to the audience to highlight the lack of suspense.
Director Ravi Chhabriya keeps the pace brisk, so the film never drags, but when the mystery falls flat, the humor feels forced, and the characters come across as mere props, fast pacing can only do so much. The talented ensemble cast delivers performances that seem half-hearted, while Dosanjh, usually known for his charisma and timing, disappoints—likely hampered by weak, underdeveloped writing.
Detective Sherdil (Zee5) Trailor :-
And that’s the main problem with Detective Sherdil — it’s not outright bad, but it falls far short of its potential. The premise had real promise: a quirky detective unraveling secrets in a mysterious mansion is classic mystery material. Yet, the execution feels lazy, the characters are forgettable, and the script never trusts the audience to think for themselves. Rather than drawing us into a complex web of intrigue, the film takes us on a dull, overly guided journey cluttered with too many underdeveloped characters.
Final Thought
Detective Sherdil aims for a clever caper but ends up feeling like little more than a flashy distraction. With a tighter script and sharper wit, it could have hit the mark. As it is, this mystery is one you won’t be bothered if it stays unsolved.
“Detective Sherdil” is now streaming on Zee5.
