Initially appearing as a straightforward revenge narrative, ‘Country Mafia’ gradually evolves into a complex political thriller set in the heartlands of India. Chausa, Bihar, finds itself under the control of an illegal liquor mafia following the prohibition, with thriving businesses giving rise to unscrupulous individuals. At the forefront is Babban (played by Ravi Kishan), a ruthless figure ready to stoop to any depths to achieve his malicious objectives. From brutal acts like slicing a man’s throat buried deep into the ground to flaunting his chauvinistic tendencies, Babban embodies the epitome of villainy. Adding to his entourage is a Godman-for-hire, Mahant (portrayed by Satish Kaushik), providing him with dubious counsel and divine intervention. However, Babban’s reign of terror meets its match in a resolute family led by the fiery Mamta (played by Anita Raaj), who is determined to bring him to justice.
The premise sets the stage for a tale rife with gunfire, bloodshed, and criminal underworlds—a formula that has become a staple on various OTT platforms, reminiscent of shows like ‘Mirzapur’ and ‘Arya,’ and famously depicted on the silver screen by Anurag Kashyap with the ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ series. Consequently, ‘Country Mafia’ faces the daunting task of living up to these high standards, inviting inevitable comparisons. While the series boasts constant action, its execution veers into overly dark territory, making binge-watching a somewhat burdensome experience. While the narrative introduces some fresh elements, the overall screenplay feels somewhat predictable. The writing could have benefited from more conviction, and the performances vary in effectiveness.
Ravi Kishan delivers a standout portrayal as the villainous Babban, eliciting both fear and disdain from the audience, while Satish Kaushik shines in his character portrayal, exuding a sense of enjoyment in his role. Anita Raaj showcases her talent in a few scenes, although her performance is not particularly memorable. On the other hand, Ayushmaan and Soundarya as siblings Ajay and Nannu deliver average performances. The series is further hindered by its loud and discordant background score, dark visuals, and convoluted plot twists featuring an abundance of characters.
In conclusion, ‘Country Mafia’ joins the ranks of dark and gritty revenge dramas from India’s heartland, ticking many boxes but failing to distinguish itself as a standout entry in the genre.
