Companion, the twisted date-night thriller from writer-director Drew Hancock, presents a love interest unlike anything seen in Hollywood. Sophie Thatcher, known for her breakout role in Yellowjackets, stars as Iris, a loyal and seemingly submissive girlfriend to her controlling partner, Josh (Jack Quaid, Peter Parker from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse). Yet their relationship conceals a dark secret that transforms what should be a romantic getaway into a blood-drenched nightmare.
From the beginning, Iris obediently follows Josh’s lead, even when he suggests a retreat to a remote mansion with four friends—among them, his ex-girlfriend Kat (Megan Suri) and her unsettling Russian sugar daddy Sergey (Rupert Friend), the flamboyant Eli (Harvey Guillén), and his charming yet dim-witted boyfriend Patrick (Lukas Gage). While Iris grapples with her insecurities in the company of the group, the true horror unfolds when she emerges, knife in hand, her pink dress drenched in blood.
It’s soon revealed that Iris isn’t human—she’s a highly advanced sex robot, programmed to cater to her partner’s every need. Josh, having hacked into her system for his own twisted purposes, controls her through a smartphone app. The film abandons the traditional whodunit approach and shifts to a more unsettling mystery: How does Iris, bound by her programming, evolve into a killing machine?
Thatcher delivers an outstanding performance, effortlessly transitioning between obedience and defiance based on her programming. Just as Iris seems to break free, Josh regains control, subjecting her to dehumanizing trials. Yet, despite her limitations, Iris remains truthful—though, crucially, she is not programmed to harm humans.
Quaid’s casting as the seemingly innocent but deeply sinister Josh is brilliant, playing off his boy-next-door persona to great effect. The supporting cast embraces their roles with equal skill, adding depth to the film. The violence is stark and dispassionate, shifting between dark humor and chilling horror depending on the victim.

Hancock expertly manipulates viewers’ expectations, guiding them to think they know where the story is headed before yanking the rug out from under them. While Companion doesn’t delve deeply into the ethical or technological questions surrounding AI, it excels in its primary aim: pure entertainment. The film’s success relies on its flawless execution, and Hancock delivers with sharp precision. Cinematographer Eli Born’s sleek visuals, combined with the clever editing by Brett W. Bachman and Josh Ethier, intensify the unsettling atmosphere, allowing the story to evolve just like Iris does.
Though Companion may not break new ground in terms of AI-driven narratives, its execution sets it apart. Hancock’s debut feature is a twisted, thrilling ride that masterfully blends satire and suspense, keeping viewers hooked right up to its unexpected final moments.
